Question: Facing a wall hanging and attaching a rod pocket!
 

I have a wall hanging to which I would like to use a facing rather than a binding but also need a rod pocket. Have any of you tried this and is it workable?

I'm thinking that I will have to face the piece and then attach loops on top for the rod. This will work. Thank you for your input. Yolanda

Tartan! If I may ask you a question, is there a formula for the number of loops to make per inch? My wall hanging is about 27" wide and only about 36" long so not that heavy?

Since it is narrow, 27", you could do the facing that uses HST's in the corners. Don't stitch the top ones down and you could insert a dowel the width of the quilt into them and hang that way.

She does a great, very detailed tutorial for facing a quilt using a wider piece for the top which you leave open on the ends and then have a matching simple hanging sleeve. I will try to add a picture of mine.

I haven't watched the video but my first thought was to make the facing at the top wide enough to slide your rod through. Suern's photo indicates that the the facing is top stitched at the seam so this make the seam secure and, as small as your wall hanging is, there is really not much problem with weight. I'd try using the facing as the sleeve and see if I liked it that way.

How wide is your facing? I just made a walllhanging like this and attached the top of my sleeve to the back at the edge. I made the sleeve so that the facing would not cover the ends of the sleeve. Then I sewed the facing to the front, catching the sleeve at the top. I then sewed the facing, making sure to go through the sleeve but not all the way to the quilt. Finally, I hand sewed the bottom of the sleeve to the quilt back. Hope this makes sense!
