a situatuation has come up, that had me pondering...

how permanent is fusibles as a stand alone adhesion?

or must the edges be stitched down in some fashion?

I've been asked for "name tags" be added to some items that have already been completed. (they r some pockets/etc that will make sewing them on now more difficult)

Looking for alternative methods of getting these tags applied.

Not all fusibles are the same. Generally speaking the lite version is intended to hold the fabric until sewn. Wonder under and Heat and bond lite are two that fit that category. The heavy version is intended to hold with out sewing ,and can not be easily sewn .. gum the needle, and can break the needle.
Steam a seam is the exception , they are all intended to hold with out sewing, but the lite version is not as stiff in the final project. I do not sew through any of the steam a seams.
Heat and bond heavy does hold but I have found that prolong dryer use will affect the bonding.
If you are trying to put a lable on an existing finished quilt , you can hand sew the lable after you turn under the edges and only sew through the backing layer. If this is not a preferable method .. my best choice would be Steam a Seam . it seems to have the strongest "hold" of any I have used.

When I recently used Pellon Wonder Under, I wanted to put another piece under one already fused down. It was very easy for me to lift the piece with my fingernail to insert the other piece. I wouldn't trust not sewing it down.

I would only fuse it for placement, then stitch around it to make it permanent. Not that I use them, but even iron-on patches for mending jeans will come off after a while.

There are heavy duty fusibles that stick well on their own, and cannot be sewn through as they gum up the needle.

Others are lighter weight, allowing them to be able to be sewn down too.

Maybe ask for a super heavy weight fusible at a fabric store? They should know which ones are the heaviest :D:D:D

washabilty will be a factor.... & they will be laundered via commercial washers/dryers.
I've broken my sewing arm , that's why I began to explore other options for appling the name tags.....
