I think it all comes down to what you call yourself....in private moments.

I was taught that to create was to make something out of nothing - Hence, God created the Heaven and the Earth.
I like to think of myself as an amateur artisan, with a love for art in the quilting sense. The design, the putting together of, and the end result is art. Whether it is perfect or not is not important. What is important is that we love what we did, we feel like we accomplished something that, one time in our life, we looked at a quilt and thought "In our dreams"!!!!! I can look at a fat quarter and know exactly what I am going to use it for and what the pattern is going to be. When is an altogether different thing. But it is here and it is mine and I will get to it when I can. I think we are all artists in our own right. Each one of us has a different plan of what we are going to do and what road we are going to take to accomplish it! That is an artist! God bless us all! Edie |
I posted some pictures of some of my quilt tops I have done on my facebook. One of my friends who is a professional art teacher and really into the art world commented that my quilts were a great example of art work. I took that as a real compliment! So yes I think we quilters are artists of a sort!!

An artist and a quilter look at things the same, they see color, design, and have a desire to use all the elements of art in what they are doing. One who does not see joy and satisfaction in creating something, is neither an artist nor a quiltmaker.

Quilting is definitely an art. I do tole painting and when I took up quilting, I consider it to be painting with fabric. It is just as much of an art form as my paintings are. Even with following a pattern, one puts their own stamp on it whether painting or quilting.

I feel great to think I'm a fair quilter (artist) although I could sit for hours and watch an artist paint a picture but so far no one has ever watched me make a quilt.

I absolutely think- artist. Even if you are following a pattern, you are putting your own spin on it with your own fabric choices. Then, even if you are using a kit, you are quilting it as you would like, so I think every quilt is a piece of artwork and the expression of the maker. To me that makes all quilters artists.

Yes! Whatever craft it is, has art in it!! :)

It was hard to think "artist" when I first started quilting, but after several years, I realized what I was making was ART. So yes Quilters are Artists.

I agree too, artist is anyone with a skill that presents an object of imagination.
