I agree with everyone, I like to think we are all artists, or fine wine, "We improve with age", number of years we quilt!

My sister is an artist. She gushes to her friends that I am a real artist with my quilts. Since we pick color, textures and design - there is no difference. Just using a different medium!

I only follow patterns and have never considered myself an "artist" but I can live with being considered one by others. I really do appreciate anyone who designs their own or incorporates other mediums such as paint.

If you doubt that quilters are artists, take a visit to an art gallery. A couple of years ago we took family from interstate to our city gallery. There was an area cordoned off right at the entrance. Inside the cordoned area was a flotilla of newspaper boats - just simple folded ones, like you make as a kid, no colour, no pattern - just paper boats. Further along there were exquisite paintings, fine porcelain and silversmithing....all within the one venue - all considered art.

I think there is a higher level of artistry in designing your own pattern, selecting all your own colors and textures quilt stitching, than in copying a pattern. Not to say that a quilt made following a pattern or a traditional block is not artistic, but the person making it is falling more in the realm of the crafts(wo)man. RST |

driving but wondeered if you would want to get together later--we should be there for next 6 months. |
I know quilters can very well be artist from a lot of the quilts I have seen. I have seen quite the pictures made with fabric--many different kinds of pictures from scenery, to people, to abstract. Very beautiful. That makes them an artist to me.
