My grandma was making a queen size quilt for me before she passed away years ago. well it still needs to be binded and quilted together. I found a person here in town that does this and will charge me $70 to quilt and $60 to do the binding=$130. Just wondering if anyone knows if this is a good price or not? Has anyone paid someone else to do the quilting for them?
thanx

To me that is a good price. I had a twin done for 80.00 four years ago and I had to do the binding myself.

That sounds like a great price!
I'd also ask if the person has references so you can see what type of work they do

Great deal from where I stand.

My long arm quilter charges $75+ for a lap quilt and that doesn't include the binding.

Just think of the treasure that you'll have once it's done.

marsye 07-07-2009 03:40 AM

Yep, that sounds like a fair price.

Great thanx for the info!! I thought it didn't sound to bad but I wasn't really sure. The lady had some pics on the web to show some of her work. She was a seamstress for years and now her husband and her do boat interiors, etc but bought a long arm quilter because of the need in our area for the service. I emailed her and she responded right away and asked questions and then quoted me the prices and said i could save the e-mail as my quote.

gaigai 07-07-2009 04:27 AM

That actually sounds like a very good price!! How much quilting is there going to be?

sewjoyce 07-07-2009 06:07 AM

Sounds like a great price to me!!

Is she including the price of the batting or do you provide that? Do you have to make the binding or just provide the fabric?

Esqmommy 07-07-2009 06:20 AM

Great price. I just paid over $200 for the long arm quilting alone, and I did the binding myself!!

Shelley 07-07-2009 06:35 AM

Ask to see her quilting first. You get what you pay for..... the price may be good, but that's about right for a really open meander, and I do mean open.

sewnsewer2 07-07-2009 07:20 AM

The quilting is a great price but I think the binding is way out of line!

I just got my king size (120" sq.) quilt back from the long armer -- Trust me -- I'd pay $70 to have someone sew that binding on for me!! I'm not sure how I'm gonna get it done without someone to help me hold the darn thing!

STAR 07-07-2009 11:49 AM

I already have the binding strips fromwhen my grandma was working on it and it is already tied together with yarn, because she was getting it ready to quilt. I saw a few pics online of her work but I will be asking questions on what way she would quilt mine, and I think she it would be done in a few days.

I am lucky to have a quilter here in Phx who quilts and binds for 45 dollars.

littlehud 07-07-2009 05:41 PM

It sounds like a great price to me.

butterflywing 07-08-2009 03:47 PM

if she does a good job, that's a great price. get recommendations.

are you afraid to tackle the binding yourself?

STAR 07-08-2009 03:58 PM

butterflywing- yes I wouldn't even try! i have yet to finish my own quilts so I have never done any binding or quilting the three pieces together and on a quilt this size  no way to start learning. the few pics that I've seen the close ups on look nice.

butterflywing 07-08-2009 04:04 PM

your time will come.

 , ah, yes!

Sounds reasonable to me---I had a lap sized quilt done and paid $90. I thought that was quite a bit but he did have a computerized long arm and the results were beautiful.

Wow you ARE lucky. That is a steal. What size?

Aileen 07-09-2009 09:25 AM

Good price, but make sure you have all instructions in writing then there is no mis-communication. Also how old is the quilt? If it is over 20 years old you need to have it checked BEFORE you have it quilted so that the quilt does not get ruined in the process.

Rose Marie 07-09-2009 11:36 AM

hokie,
All Sizes. She says it takes as much prep for a small quilt as a large one so it is the same price on all sizes.

Great deal. It would pay to send mine to her if you like the work, but I enjoy the quilting myself.

Rose Marie 07-09-2009 11:41 AM

That is the only problem. She is so busy it takes 3 months to get your quilt done.

FAYE 07-09-2009 12:39 PM

Rose Marie-I too live in your area-down Tempe way-would like the name of your quilter, I just don't have the space to get a big project going to finish my quilt Faye

KayBee 07-10-2009 07:15 AM

A GREAT PRICE! Check on recommendations for her work. You often get what you pay for.

Rose Marie 07-10-2009 09:39 AM

My little group has used her for years. She does good work. No free hand stuff she uses the rolls of paper patterns and a lazer for designs.
She even hand sews the binding on the back.

crazyquilter 07-13-2009 08:50 AM

Is the binding to be done by hand or by machine? If by machine, it sounds quite pricey. Here's why... (Oh and paying a huge price does not always guarantee a fantastic job... I am retired, do this because I enjoy it, don't have to make a killing at it, and cater to an older group of quilters, many on a fixed income who are very pleased with what I do, and I enjoy making people happy.) Back to the topic here! I am a long arm quilter and will do the binding if requested. I only do binding by machine. I sew the binding on the backside, then use a decorative stitch (usually feather stitch) to finish it off on the topside. To me it is more durable than hand stitiching, and is prettier as well. I just completely finished a 113x130 quilt for a customer. It had an appliqued top (dogwoods and ribbons rather sparsely placed) I outlined the applique, then meandered the rest. I charged a total of $95.00 for quilting and binding. She supplied backing and batting. I use a small table beside my sewing machine to support the weight of the quilt while I'm doing the binding. It took a little less than an hour to completely bind that big baby.
If I could get things to work right, I would upload a picture of it. I seem to have a problem uploading anything, although my pics are in jpg and small file formats. Any suggestions about what I may be doing wrong?
TIA

STAR 07-13-2009 02:50 PM

crazyquilter, thanx for the info. I also thought the binding was kind of high considering that the quilting itself is only ten dollars more. I thought of asking about it but didn't want her to have second thoughts and then up the price of quilting, although she did say to save my e-mail as my quote. She has a long arm machine so it will be done on there. where are you located? thanx star
