Question re: sashing - how wide?

I have 12" blocks that I'm setting on point and adding corners to complete them at 18". On a 12" block I've always used 2" (finished) sashing strips. For the 18" blocks should I make the sashing strips wider - say 2 1/2" or 3" finished width? Are there any guidelines for width of sashing?

You can use whatever size you want to make the quilt the size you want. 3" finished size sashing would be just fine, 4" might be ok, too. The only thing you don't want is to have the sashing so large that it overpowers the blocks.

One guideline I've read says sashing should never be more than 1/3 the width of the block. I suppose that is a good guideline. If it were larger, it might start to look like another block almost.

Here's a recent discussion that has a few more opinions as well. http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...g-t221720.html
