I'm making a braid quilt for my soon to be DIL and she loves purple and brown....so that's what I'm making :).
My question is this: Are the braid supposed to go the same way or can they alternate?
I've laid out 3 of the columns to show you what I mean.
Any suggestions/comment are welcome.

I don't know how it is "supposed to be". But, I like the first one - alternating rolls. Very nice!

tlrnhi 11-05-2009 05:23 PM

I think you can make it anyway you want!

tigger5464 11-05-2009 05:25 PM

beautiful work :) :) Something I've wanted to do :) I've seen them done both ways so, I would think that I would be up to you as how you would want the placement to be. Keep up the beautiful work :)

Lissy 11-05-2009 05:26 PM

WOW! You have two gorgeous but very different and distinct looks. I like them both. Do it the way you like it!

Ducky 11-05-2009 05:36 PM

The one I'm working on is all the same direction. I really like the alternating rows -- I wish I would have thought of that.

adriansmom 11-05-2009 05:41 PM

I vote for the alternating rows...but that's just me. It is going to be beautiful no matter what! The colors are gorgeous together. Excellent job!

Thanks for the kind words :) :). I'm leaning toward the alternating version but wanted to see what ppl had to say. I know it's not the "traditional" way, but my (almost) DIL is young and I'm thinking this would be fine with her. At least she'll know it's a gift from my heart .

Either looks great, but I think the same way makes it look more 3D. Or is that just my eyes?

I don't know either but the first one is my choice too!

Esqmommy 11-06-2009 07:45 AM

I like them going the same way...I think it looks more cohesive and allows the colors to be viewed more harmoniously. IMHO.

kathy 11-06-2009 08:38 AM

when I did mine I started with a square and worked in both directions (like the table runner that many on here have done) that way I had points going up and down .

liked the table runner too, but isn't that a "french braid"?.

All: Thanks for the inputs I've rearranged so many times, same way, opposite way, with sashing, w/o sashing. I'm going to lay it on the spare bed and come back to it next week :lol: Maybe that might help a little too.
Again, many thanks, it's great to get other opinions, especially when you're stuck and quilting alone :).

kathy 11-06-2009 09:53 AM

LOL I guess mine is French braid.

mimee4 11-06-2009 10:00 AM

No quilt police here. Do it whatever way suits you. I like the first on.

katier825 11-06-2009 10:03 AM

I've seen them both ways. I like the first one best. Another thing I've seen done is a narrow border between the rows - maybe 1-1/2" or so. I think if you do that you might want to audition some colors to see what works best. Keep us posted on your progress! :D

joeyoz 11-06-2009 10:23 AM

It's your quilt. You can do it any way you want. I don't think the quilt police are going to come knocking on your door because you want to alternate the braids. LOL

It looks wonderful either way. :D :D :D

Thanks....just have to say, I love your quote :) :lol:
Burst out laughing the first time I read it.

LOL :lol: :lol: :lol: Glad it made you laugh. That was the reason it was put there. If it can make just one person laugh, it's done it's job.

littlehud 11-06-2009 05:27 PM

I think it could be done either way. I like the first one better.

adrianlee 11-07-2009 12:44 PM

I did one couple years ago. It went together like this
===================== sashing
>>>>>>>>>[ ]<<<<<<<<<<< braid, block, braid
===================== sashing
>>>>>>>>>[ ]<<<<<<<<<<< braid, block, braid
===================== sashing
>>>>>>>>>[ ]<<<<<<<<<<< braid, block, braid
===================== sashing
I had a really nice focus fabric for the middle block. I wish I had taken a photo that I could share. This was given as a gift to good friends. These are fun to make.

Sharon- good idea to lay them out on the bed and forget them for awhile. WhoM knows-they just might re-arrange themselves the way THEY want to be. lol ! The colors are beautiful and no matter what you decide, it is gonna be beautiful and it will be received with LOVE!!!

Thanks :) I'm working on my Downy Quilt for Kids Quilt, finishing a quillow, my mum's quilt and a granddaughters quilt...plus 5 Christmas stockings :) :) ...so a break is a good idea. Often works for me :)
I like the colors, I didn't think I would, but they seem to work in the braid design. Live and learn :lol:

borntoquilt 11-08-2009 05:34 PM

Sharon-You sure are busy!! I just ordered 10 Downey kits today! I've got my quilt group all fired up to make them. Hopefully we can make MORE from our own stashes, too! They are soo simple. I have finished 10 (so far) "20 minute pillow cases" (in flannel-to be used as wrapping for Christmas gifts!), working on a Christmas wall hanging (that is desperately wanting to be a (my) bed quilt (LOL)), trying to get a quilt finished for my friends birthday this month.... and the list goes on and on and on.... WAHOO! I LOVE IT! Have put YOUR quilt "on the LIST"!!!

Nzm 11-09-2009 01:13 PM

I just made a French braid one and used strips of contrasting fabric between the braids.. makes them really stand out.. will take a pic and post in the near future. Try that and see if you like it..

amma 11-09-2009 01:33 PM

I think it is however you like it :D :D :D I look forward to seeing what you decide on.

ljptexas 03-14-2010 09:54 AM

How did you quilt when it was finished? Stitch in the ditch or what?

LOL - Jodie

I gave this at Christmas and the only pictures I had of it were blurry. I asked my son to take pictures (front and back) since I pieced the back :).
Hopefully, I'll get them soon. I ended up SID, and was soooo pleased with it. Alina loved it too, so that was wonderful.
