I have been exploring here and see a number of great projects using selveges......BUT, no one says (or I missed it) ....what size do you usually cut your selveges???? I know -- probably a dumb question...however, I think I want to start saving them and play with them!!!! :-D
|
I have been wondering the same thing. How wide do they need to be?
|
This may not be the answer you are looking for but I do believe the width is up to you. I have been making mine
1 1/2 in to 2 in. |
That's about the width I cut mine. Been saving them for a rainy day.
|
Thanks... I was thinking about that, but wanted to see what you were doing!!! Now.....to SAVE! LOL
|
Someone told me 1/2" - 1" + the salvege.
|
What do you do with the salvages after saving them? What kind of projects use salvages? Thanks.

Prefer not to cut up till I'm ready to use.... :)
get folded and thrown in a basket, or larger pieces put w/remnants :D |
My question is are selvages pieced with a 1/4 inch seam or stitched on a foundation piece with raw edges left? I would like to make some selvage pot holders but can't seem to grasp how to do them. I love the way they look. Thanks all.

When I am making a project with several fabrics I stack the with the folded sides aligned. I trim the selvage side so that all my fabrics are the same width. I start at the end and slice the selvage about 18" or so. I don't cut it off at the point tho, because if I use all the fabric, I will let the salvage hang on until I get to the end. Then I have long strips of selvage that I can fold neatly and store in a drawer.
If I'm trimming one piece of yardage I determine what width of fabric I need then trip the leftover on the selvage side. Sometime I don't even get a usable width and toss it, but usually there is a couple of inches. |
I think the width of selvege I cut off depends of the fabric itself. I just cut off the part that does not have the desired print.
