Does anyone know what size I should make the small blocks for a snowball quilt? I am going to use a ten inch Layer Cake for the main block. I searched on the board, but most were 2.5 inch blocks on a five inch square. Wouldn't that be too small for a larger main block?

I'm excited to get started!!!

how about 5" blocks on a 10" square

if it's a 2.5 for a 5in. square then it should be a 5 in on a 10 in sq.

I like the corners of the snowball to cover the corners but not meet in the middle. If you use a 5 inch corner square, it will look more like a diamond in a square.

I like to base it on a 9-patch measurement so that 1/3 is a corner, 1/3 is the center portion, and 1/3 the other corner. The center then becomes a hexagon (6 sides). For a 10" block I would cut 3-5/8 (including seam allowances).

You experienced quilters are the best!

I agree with Audrey, according to my eq, if you want bigger triangles on the corners of the 10" square then cut your little squares at 4 1/8", if you want less on the corners then cut them at 3 3/8"

If you're keeping track, put me down with Audrey and btiny. That's the way I like my snowballs.

2 1/2" on a 5" square gives you a 'square in a square' block-not a snowball block-
the squares for a 5" block are (traditionally 1 1/2")
i have a pattern for a 10" snowball block quilt- it uses 3 1/2" squares- i made a different one that used 4" squares but looks wise- i like the ones with the 3 1/2" better.

I agree with your instructions, it's what I use for my patterns too.
