Compromise and use laterals. It's what I did. It keep my fabric out of sunlight and it's tucked away neatly but laterlas open differently than drawers. The front slides up and the drawer part slides out so you can see everything. You can stack them or stand them up like bookshelves. Here's a picture of the outside of mine. Let me know if you want to see it open. It's about 5' x 5' and holds a lot of fabric. You can also stack storage boxes or quilts waiting to be quilted on top. I got mine pretty cheap from law firm that was closing.

Luvtoquilt - please come organize my stash and sewing room. Yours sounds amazing. It could be like a vacation for you in sunny Florida. LOL

Dotha, shelves for me too. Acid free cardboard for larger pieces and plastic bins for fat quarters, etc. I'm going to show pics soon b/c I got tons of advice when I posted a desperate HELP to board members!! :D
Your avatar pic is STUNNING!!

Trying to organize our shared "craft" room to give DH more space for larger work area. I'm using a small hutch for my stash and have outgrown it. Hate digging through drawers. Stash going into clear plastic boxes on closet shelves and hutch to garage sale.

kapatt 06-17-2011 05:51 AM

I would not want the material in a drawer. I like to match and compare fabric when I'm looking for material. If the fabric is in a drawer, I would have to take everything out of the drawer to find what I was looking for.

Have you looked at AlaskaSunshine's tutorial on storing fabric? http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-43871-1.htm

I folded my fabric the way she did and then I put them on their side in a clear tub sorted by color.

carslo 06-17-2011 06:06 AM

I used an older china cabinet - the hutch part.

mhansen6 06-17-2011 06:22 AM

I would go for the cabinets. Keeps the fabric from fading with sunlight and keeps it cleaner.

Becka 06-17-2011 06:23 AM

Shelves, absolutely. Just ask him how difficult it would be if they stacked all the different lumbers drawer style so you had to rifle through them to find the right size. That might help him relate better to the shelf method. And if it bothers him that much, you can put up a curtain, or he can make you a door system with pegs to hang your rulers, threads, etc... :)

Doreen 06-17-2011 06:59 AM

I also used the comic books sheets and re organized my fabric. I like shelves that way I can see what I have. Also I keep my fabric out of the sunlight.

pmintpat 06-17-2011 07:10 AM

Who is working with the fabric and doing the quilting/sewing?

JoanneS 06-17-2011 07:37 AM

I finally finished wrapping my fabric on foam core boards - and it has taken me MONTHS - but it was worth the effort - much better than storing it flat. The scraps I have in drawers will be the next thing I organize. Some of them have not been seen in YEARS! Get the picture? You may not be like me, but drawers are for things like thread, bias tape, scissors etc NOT fabric!

EDIT: I drape sheets over them to avoid fading - learned the hard way.

ShirlinAZ 06-17-2011 07:41 AM

I have my fabric in drawers but I stand it on edge as if it were on a shelf. That way I can see every piece when I open the drawer. I also found I could get twice as much fabric in a drawer by standing on edge.

Deborahlees 06-17-2011 07:44 AM

I use both...I have plastic drawers from walmart that stack...have folded all of my less than a yard pieces of calico, sorted by color and then put on edge in the drawers. Larger pieces are all folded on mini bolts and on shelves. Collections like Christmas, Halloween, all have their own boxes... whatever works for you is the key, it can be overwhelming to begin, but there is a great deal of satisfaction when you are done.

f rogers 06-17-2011 07:45 AM

forget drawer you will lose the fabric or have to dig for it. shelves and layer it. from experience found fabric I had forgotten about as it was on the bottom never really look there.

mudsprite 06-17-2011 07:45 AM

I wanted to have a piece I could use again and again so I bought a chrome wire storage shelf unit with wheels from Costco. If I ever quit sewing the shelf can go to the garage or pantry for storage there.
One gal I know has one in her kitchen and it looks great.

I can easily find my fabric and get two rows on a shelf, front and back. As it moves so easily I just swing it out to check the other side for fabric.

I now have three of these shelves and my husband bought one for his shop. No construction.

Glassquilt 06-17-2011 07:55 AM

When I'm having a bad back day I can't sort plastic tubs with fabric or open heavy drawers.

Sallyjane 06-17-2011 07:59 AM

I vote for shelves too. I have been collecting pictures of sewing/craft rooms. I just looked back through them and only see one photo of fabric stored in drawer and I think they are small cuts (maybe FQ), all stacked facing up cardfile fashion. I will try to send a link to my collection of pictures:

Linda E 06-17-2011 08:04 AM

ditto to what Laurie said...I'd hate drawers. Give me shelves!!!

here are some pics of my fabric I just wrapped on comic book boards and I love the way they look. As you can see, I ran out of boards halfway, I had 100 boards and thought that was plenty. I had no idea how much fabric I really had. I keep going into my room to look at them, they look so pretty. I got the bookshelves at Ikea, and they are perfect

dixiebelle162002 06-17-2011 08:59 AM

I am currently using drawers and it is a huge mess trying to find fabric. I would get shelves if at all possible.

Hi...In April we finished refurbishing my sewing room completly and have my fabric on shelves behind doors or in baskets....My stash isn't massive but the great thing is my room remains so tidy...really easy to find everything and really quick to put everything away....love it. ( i will re post the pics of the 'expedit'cupboards, baskets etc bought from ikea)

IBQUILTIN 06-17-2011 09:34 AM

I also hate drawers for fabric, you are forever digging to find what you need, and then you get to reorganize so often that it drives you nuts. Shelving makes much more sense

Would love to see pictures, as your descriptions are somewhat hard to visualize. I am trying desperately to reorganzie my craft/quilting/business supplies room. Removed an inadequate closet to build shelves for fabric. Hard to find places to store so I can work in room.
God Bless,
Sondra

g-maquilts 06-17-2011 11:00 AM

I use clothes hangers and shelves in a walk in closet and clear plastic totes under my cutting table.

Rachel 06-17-2011 11:01 AM

I only like drawers for fat quarters so you can stand them up and still see the edge of each one. Otherwise, its definitely shelves for me.

kwiltnutt 06-17-2011 11:09 AM

Use shelves so you can see it; drawers seem to make my fabric disappear! Just MHO!

grammy stef 06-17-2011 11:24 AM

i'm new to sight .iput my fat quarters in cd wooden crates from michael's . i hung them on the walls ,all in individual colors , batiks, etc. works great i can see them all. i think i have more fat qts. than joann's . close to 1500.crazy.

Dotha 06-17-2011 11:30 AM

Thank you for all of your help. I appreciate all the good ideas. I am not familiar with the comic book boards. Guess I have not bought any comic books lately to see what you are talking about. I emailed my son about the coroplast sign board since he has a sign business (as well as a day job for insurance purposes) but stupid me sent it to the wrong email address so he did not get it. I will see him tonight. Yes, I read the tutorial that was put up by sunshinealaska AFTER I made my original post here. It sure was helpful. I have my most fun/favorite fabrics put away in the cabinet now so I only want to admire that beautiful sight rather than move on with the other nitty gritty stuff.

It is funny, we don't know each other but most all of us, well our minds all run in the same track. Isn't that funny? When I very first got hooked on quilting, I told my instructor that I had been to the Stitchin Post and bought a bunch of fabric. She said "When you got in the car did you take it out of the bag and glance it all the way home?" My mouth dropped. I said, "How did you know?" She said, "Oh, I just know."

anyway, I loved all the responses...wish I could remember all of your names. Maybe in time I will.

Course it's a little messy right now. And, I really need to put the rest up there!

Any thoughts. Dh is doing everything he can to help me with the sewing room reorganization and I appreciate it so much but now I am to a point where I think I know best. Just thought I would ask for input to figure out if I am right or if I should listen to him. I have one of those white cabinet things with the doors (sell for about80 to 100 dollars) and I love it. I want at least one more. Help with your advice, please.

Now....THAT'S a stash !!! Mine's about 1/3 that size. COOL!!

gbquilter 06-17-2011 01:53 PM

Whether it's shelves, drawers, or bins keep your fabric out of the sun. I have caninets so I can close the doors, but that's my preferance.

Excuse my rudeness, but I don't tell my BF how to arrange the garage, and he knows better than to tell me how to arrange my sewing room. I do consider 99% of his suggestions; and I value his opinion, but...........this is my space. Leave me and my mess alone. We will deal with this wreck as soon as you allow me into the garage. 'nuff said. Said only with a smile. :-)

here is a good tutorial about using boards. Mine were only 7 x 10 1/2, could not find them any bigger but they work fine. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-43871-1.htm

MargeD 06-17-2011 05:16 PM

I'm not a fan of drawers - out of sight - out of mind. I am definitely not as organized as luvTooQuilt (guess I'm missing the organizational gene) but I like the see through plastic tubs - separated into groups - by color, Christmas, fall, seasonal, backings, etc. and it works pretty well. At least I can see pretty much what is in each tub and I try to write on a 4 X 6 note card what is in the tub. It was the only way I could get my fabric organized when we downsized from a three-bedroom house to a two-bedroom apt., and I do mean downsized. Hubby hates the bins in the dining room, but they are against one wall and we rarely use the dining room table except for my computer and when I need to cut things out that are too big for my cutting mat in the bedroom/sewing room. One time he actually said it wasn't too bad because of all the colorful fabric. Guess he must have been in a very good mood. Good luck with your sewing room, I'm jealous.

milikaa1 06-17-2011 06:08 PM

My neighbor stores hers in filing cabinets and the plastic totes, she buys the metal rods for the plastic totes and then hangs the hanging files and drapes her fabrics over those, you can always see the fabrics and it is nice and organized.

Scroll down the page and they have many sizes. I like to have mine about 9" so I can count the folds and add up the 1/4 yards for my yardage. http://www.bcwsupplies.com/products/...e-Accessories/

You ladies who fold your fabric on shelves which is what I do also - question--How do you neatly remove a piece. I mess mine stack up every time I have to pull one from the bottom.
