Question on storing thread
 

What does everyone store their thread in. I am talking about the cones that are about 5" tall? I have mine on a rack right now on the wall but would prefer to store them in something.
If you have something could you please post a pic so I can see Thank you.

How many are you talking about? I only have 2 cones and have decided they are not for me for that reason. My major storage issue is the embroidery thread. I get the larger spools and seeing the color is important to me since I use quite a few at a time. Someone here had a small drawer unit on wheels from Ikea called the Alex. I am amble to lay the thread on its side so I can see the colors clearly. The spice holders I can put in the drawers to keep them from rolling all over the place. (The unit on here, someone put custom made slots for the thread, but I don't have the tools to make them so used the spice holders.)
The main reason I wanted to keep them in drawers was to avoid the exposure to light.

This is what I have my embroidery thread in the rolls in this hold 1000M each.

I am now starting to go with the ones that hold 5000M each and I actually have quite a few. Want to get more but don't want them just sitting around. Would like to find a cabinet for them.

This is all I have right now but will have more.

I have mine in plastic totes made for threads. sulky made some. regular size spools and then i have the Connecting threads spools in three that fit them. Good luck.

for my long arm cones, which I have a lot, I use a plastic "tote within a tote", sorted by color family. the bottom tote is about 18" deep and the one that fits inside it is about 6" deep. They are the same size on the width and length and I do end up with one extra lid per tote combo, but just put them away for who knows what.(Walmart purchases) I keep them under my long arm frame, sorted by color families, and the totes are the perfect height for me to put my feet on while sitting on my drafting stool working. So it's a 2fer! I like them in totes this way so I can see all the cones pretty easy and they are kept from dust and drying out. I live on a gravel (dirt) road so there is ALWAYS dust no matter how often I clean--having thread or fabric on open shelves just don't work.

I do not have any thread cones. I have my regular thread out on rack, even though everyone recommends against it. It may not be good for the thread, but I really need to see it and have it handy. It's what works for me.

Several years ago I got an adorable thread cabinet from ABC Distributing. It has a cute painting of a vintage sewing machine on the front. Unfortunately it will only hold 25 regular size spoils of thread. I'm hoping a woodworking friend of mine can make a larger one for the bigger sizes.

I have an antique steamer trunk that still had the insets. All my thread is in the insets and I use the bottom half to store pantos and fabric.

I hate to admit it, but mine are on top of the piano in the living room (sit down quilting machine is also in that room).
