Question...
I have a lot of yardage of black velveteen. Would it be too heavy to use as narrow sashes? It'd be a quilt for my queen bed of scrappy cats. Thinking quilting in the ditch....

As long as it is washable, I don't see why not. I have used corduroy for sashing and border before. It was fine wale, so it wasn't too thick. How thick or heavy is the velveteen, and what is it being sewed to? Try a sample to see how it works together. If you use it, we want to see pictures!!

I think it would be fine. If you aren't sure, then make a throw using the velveteen as a sashing and see how you like it. The issue you might have is that velveteen tends to be stretchy. You might need to back it with some type of interfacing, maybe a wash-away one to stabilize long enough to get it all sewn together, or maybe do a quilt as you go so that you don't end up fighting that stretch. Pellon has some really lightweight stabilizers that are available at JoAnn or Hancock Fabrics.

It will look like fur, which will be purr-fect!

Go for it!!! Quilts can be made from almost any fabric..

I think it would be great, just make sure it is colorfast, won't bleed all over the rest of the quilt. Let us see a pic when you are done.

If it is washable, it should work. If there is nap, you will have to be careful with what direction you sew it.
|
If you decide to go for it - my only suggestion would be to clean out your bobbin case OFTEN !! It will make LOTS of very fine fuzzy lint that will clog the bobbin case very quickly....just like faux suede does. Ask me how i know this!!:p:p

It would be wonderful. Velvet/ teen might fray a lot so I would use pinking shears to cut it rather than a straight cut. Watch for the nap direction so the pile all goes in the same direction for uniformity, or not. It may look cool with a random pile. Looking forward to see what you do!

In addition to the other comments, be careful velvet is not forgiving when you need to take out stitches... it does leave a hole.
