Question on washable markers
Those of you who have used the washable markers to mark quilting lines, what color did you find worked best on white fabrics? Thanks for any help.
|
I just bought a package of those and thought I would take some white fabric and mark all the colors on it, then wash it. Maybe I'll have time to do that today (although between babysitting the DGD, the pest people coming (ants and mice!), and having to get my glasses fixed at some point...). Okay! I'll go mark it right now, before the madness begins, and get back to you later!!

If you are testing the Ultra Clean Washable Crayola Fine Tipped Marking Pens, be sure to iron them also. That way you will know if they work if you hit the fabric with the iron before you wash the ink out. When I ironed my piece, it did wash out even though I ironed it.

For white fabric, I usually use a purple be gone and mark as I stitch. Never had a problem before.
|
I like purple or blue the best. They seem to come out the quickest for me. But I've used red as well on a pure white background & that also came out no problem after a minute or two of hand agitation. I've learned to put a Color Catcher into the tub for that first soak to keep me from panicking that the white has absorbed the marker. Of course, if you don't forget about your quilt soaking for 30 minutes, that might not be a problem in any case.

I've used all the colors of different kind of Crayola washable markers and all the marks/lines have come out in the wash. Love them!

I have used the Crayola washable markers as well as the CraZart washable markers. I use them all and have never had any issues with them out completely. But do test on all fabrics before using on a quilt, as there may be that one troublesome fabric!
|
Thank you all, going to try them out on a quilt in the next few days. The quilt is from the book Quilting Wide Open Spaces by Judi Madsen and there is a lot to mark.

Walmart has CraZArt Super Washable Markers (box of 10 assorted colors) on sale right now for $.50 (regularly $1.97).

Thanks Wanda!

I tested about 8 Crayola Ultra Washable markers this morning on several colors of fabric. I marked them heavily in the top row, and with a finer point below. Then I let them dry, ironed them, washed them in All Free in warm water, then dried on permanent press. Results are as follows:
Looks pretty bad! Most of the color washed away. The worst culprits were the reds. It's faint, but clear. Of course, these were big, thick marks. All the fine point marks washed away. The white fabric was Kona, the others??? I'm glad to have done this as I need to mark a quilt for quilting tonight! |
Mford, thank you so much!!!! Will definitely stay away from the reds. I'm using the ultra clean fine points so my lines will hopefully be fine. Again thanks for the experiment!
|
I have also tried all different colors & they all washed out just fine
|
Our twin 4 year old grandchildren get them on everything...washes out of the clothes and anything else they color. I recently borrowed a couple to use for marking. So far so good!
|
I use the fine point washable markers all the time. They have never failed to completely wash out of my material no matter what color I'm using. Love these markers.

also I let them dry completely, about 3 hours and pressed them also ,...washed out fine the next day. |
I use the Frixion felt tip not ball point markers. It irons off and after washing, never returns.

Thanks Margaret for your thorough testing results. It helps so much.

I think the markers you bought are Crayola Washable markers, not Ultra Clean. Crayola's website says they don't make Ultra Clean markers with the super tips (maybe in the future??? we can hope!). I've found that the washable markers do not come out as consistently as the Ultra Clean markers so you maybe want to always test those markers since several ladies in my quilt guild have had occasional (but rare) difficulties with the Washable markers not coming out. For anyone interested, here are what the package of the Ultra Clean fine-tip markers looks like: http://demandware.edgesuite.net/sits...m=fit&sfrm=jpg |
If you mark an entire quilt top & take a month or so to hand quilt it, will the markers still wash out?
|
Answering my own question here  they do!!!! I decided to be brave & try & I was very pleased with the results.

I was a little leary of it myself, but after testing, have felt very comfortable using it to mark my quilt blocks. I have the fine tip. http://www6.discountschoolsupply.com...&v56keycodel=0 |
There is a purple one that I like. The lines disappear after a couple of hours. I can't remember what the brand is. This is a quilting marker, not crayola.

I have used the regular washable markers and have not had a problem as long as I don't iron before I wash out the marks. I am going to try the ultra clean -- thanks for the tip.
|
Thanks to all you great ladies here Now I know what to buy.
|
thanks for the picture, and jump link. I ordered on line, $3.50 for 10 and free shipping.
|
Several sources say you need to thorough soak (but don't use detergent) to permanently remove the purple or blue markers because when you just mist them it disappears but not from the bat.
|
I wonder if the type of water you have in your area might make a difference too. Just thinking out loud here. White hair can get stained blonde from minerals etc. in well water or municipal water.
Probably wouldn't hurt to try our own tests before we marked something important. The test posted above was very impressive, thanks! |
