Questions about self binding
 

I have a quilt top that I want to try self binding on. I need to know how far out does the backing extend past the sandwich edge? Do I baste the edges together? I looked for a tutorial with no success :( Anyone out there with tips on this process, I would appreciate your input.

I try and have my backing 4" larger than the top, because the quilting will take up a bit of the extra. After the quilting is done I square up the top and batting (don't trim the backing yet).Sew 1/2" all around the sandwich edge, all layers. Then trim the backing to be 2" beyond the edges. Now fold and iron your binding 1/2" all around. Fold forward again so that the ironed edge meets the basting line. You can hand sew or machine sew down your binding. The corners can be mitered or straight folded. Clear as mud, right?!

Try searching youtube. there are a couple there - Jenny Doan from Missouri Quilt Company has one on baby receiving blankets - it's the same technique. Follow TwinRiverFarms measurements and it'll go well for you.

I've used this method. I like it because it shows how to miter the corners.

Pressing the binding edge under is key to a non-wavy finish. AMHIK!
