Questions about tee shirt quilts

As usual, at a craft show today, someone asked if I do custom work. Well, sure what do you need? They want a quilt made from a whole bunch of tee shirts. So, after looking at this subject here on the board, it looks as if I need to use a stabilizer. What kind works well for this chore, and do you put it on before you cut the shirt? Also, I am planning to use a sashing between the squares. Will probably do quilting in the ditch or a quarter in, on the sashing, but any advice about how to quilt on the shirt block would be appreciated. Thanks:)

I used an iron-on tricot stabilizer. Yes, you adhere the stabilizer before you cut the blocks from the shirts (you can cut the front off and just iron the stabilizer behind the area you want to use, then square up for the block). Be sure to put the stretch of the stabilizer perpendicular to the stretch of the shirt. I've only done 2 t-shirt quilts, but I did a rather loose meander on the shirts themselves because some of them had those plasticky letters and logos that I didn't want to quilt over. By meandering I could go around those areas.

Write up a quote for materials and labor before starting. Get half the money up front if possible. Most people have no idea how much a quilt actually costs to make.
