Questions on how to make a Butterfly Handkerchief Quilt
I have finally collected enough handkerchiefs to make a Butterfly Handkerchief quilt for my Mom. I though if I start on it now, I might have it done by Mothers Day. I have a few questions that I am hoping someone has the answers to.
Do you need to iron on interfacing to the handkerchiefs? Do you need to to iron on interfacing for the main fabric that I am sewing my butterflys to? After I have the butterflys sewn on, do I need to cut out the background fabric under the butterflys? Do you have to hand stitch the butterflys to the background fabric or can I machine sew it? Any advice and sugestions welcomed. |
Here's a link to a quilt shown on the board previously.

I found a link on the Missouri Quilt Company blog but it led me right back here to the QB! Haha!! Here is a link to the search here for "Hanky Butterfly" as the link at MSQC didn't work. You might also search for "handkerchief butterfly".

I put interfacing on the hankie but not on the background fabric. I hand stitched the butterflies to the background and did not cut away the background--the interfacing kept the background from showing through. I don't know why you couldn't sew by machine, I chose to do them by hand.

The reply posts will be interesting. I have old hankies and would love to create a hankie quilt also.
