I rarely have that problem Do you change your needle regularly a poor needle can do this and engage the IDT when piecing

The easiest way to solve this problem is just to hold the threads behind the sewing as you start sewing. The single hole needle plate also helps as long as you remember to change it before you so any zigzag stitching.

While I've always known a new needle can help, I didn't realize how much until recent years. Most of my sewing was self taught through the years. I have the exact same machine, I keep the ide on for most things. I also grasp the needle and bobbin thread to the back the first few stiches. I don't have the single needle plate, wish I did. I just saw a Martha Pullen show about needles. It was emphasized just how important changing needles often is.

When I tried holding the threads back last night, it seemed awkward to me for some reason, and the machine didn't want to move the fabric correctly with tension on the thread, but it was late and it was probably just operator error. I have a bunch of piecing to work on today so I will give it another try. Thanks again everyone for your help, this board is such a wealth of information about sooooo many topics.

I have Pfaff and have that problem too. I tried using a different needle (I think it's a Universal 80 or 90?) instead of a microsharp. Anyway, it really made a difference. I'll try holding the threads too.

Forgot to mention I change my needle after each project and it really helps. Years ago I didn't do this and although there wasn't a real problem when I started changing after each project I was amazed at how much better my machine sewed. Go to:

Bob will tell you what needle size to use for your particular thread. Even if you don't purchase there you will find a wealth of helpful information.

My Pfaff did the same thing too so I got the small hole plate & that solved the problem. I am in the habit of using starters % enders too.

Use a starter piece or hold onto both threads.

I have two pfaffs and never expierenced that problem, one is a IDT and the other isn't.

Try using "starter" scraps. I think all machines will try to "eat" your fabric for what ever reason. Bonnie Hunt has made some beautiful scrap quilts with her "starters".
