Quick Curve Ruler

Does anyone have one of these? Looking at the pictures of it on the website I can't picture how it is used, unless it has a slot to insert the cutter. I love the Urban Candy Quilt and would love to make one but unsure whether the ruler is worth it. I am giving links to both so you can see what I am talking about.

I have always worried about how to sew curves. Good question.

elnan 05-05-2016 06:43 AM

Watch the video presented on the website that your second link, sewkindofwonderful, takes you to. I agree that just looking at the picture of the template makes you think that it is all one solid piece, but when she picks it up, you can see the narrow slot for the rotary cutter.

I started a DWR with that ruler but life got in the way. the curves are easy. Her trimming directions on this one were different than what i usually do and i forgot and did some my way. Didn't hurt the design of pieces going together. These are not sewn into a block yet.

seems pricy to me for a one use ruler.

I was Road2CA and fell in love with a quilt that was being used to cover a table in one of the vendor booths. The lady in the booth was demonstrating the Quick Curve Ruler, and the quilt was Chic Kisses - http://sewkindofwonderful.com/produc...-paper-pattern - using that ruler. I watched the demo and wound up buying the ruler and the pattern for Chic Kisses. I'm definitely not a sucker for tools at quilt shows, but I will definitely make this pattern with this ruler, and probably some of the other patterns as well.

I think it's part of the fun, using a new tool.

Not really a one use ruler. The amount of patterns they have come with using this ruler is truly mind boggling. The sewkindofwonderful sisters are two very talented ladies. They have also come up with ways to make more traditional patterns like the DWR and Winding Ways using it. I bought one last month along with their pattern for Winding Ways (they call it Chic Country) but have not had an opportunity to try it out yet. they also make a long arm ruler that matches the arc of the piecing so you can duplicate some of the their quilting featured on their blog. And they regularly offer up new designs/patterns on their blog for free as a tutorial quilt along when they first introduce them. Once the quilt along is done then they sell the pattern.

Thanks for that information, feline.

I did not see a one-use ruler, but I did see a 7" X 12" rectangular template with a cutting curve built in. I offered to help a friend cut for a group of children she was teaching to make quilts, thinking it would be 5, 6 or 6.5 inch squares. When she said 7" squares, I had to re-think how I would do it. Sometimes I can get off the mark when lining up fabric with a long ruler that is 8" or 6.5" wide.

yngldy 05-05-2016 03:02 PM

I have used it to draft and modify traditional designs when making a pattern.

renda 05-06-2016 03:13 AM

Check out Phillips Fiber Art - they are featuring this ruler today. They also offer a couple free patterns using this ruler

celwood 05-06-2016 03:30 AM

Yes, I have one and it works well. It comes with very good instructions. It does have a slot that you insert your rotary cutter.

At their site Cheryl has some free patterns that you can download using that ruler and some tutorials.

I made this quilt using the qcr and won best in show at a local challenge. It took some getting used to and I probably would have had an easier time if I'd bought a pattern. I just muddled through with the freebie directions on the web.

You are thinking of a different ruler. The OP is asking about the Sew Kind of Wonderful Quick Curve Ruler. Phillips Fiber Arts does not sell it.
This is the ruler the OP was asking about
http://sewkindofwonderful.com/collections/all

There are many quilt shops that carry it but Phillips Fiber art is not one of them. They do have a curve ruler that looks very much like the same idea though.

I have this ruler and really like it. I am going to make more of their patterns, they are really quite easy and fun!

DebraK 05-06-2016 04:42 AM

Thanks for the information about the longarm ruler. Hadn't seen that one yet.

Pam S 05-06-2016 04:58 AM

I admit, I am a ruler and gadget junkie. I have the QCR and the longarm ruler that goes with it. Love them both. There is a learning curve, but once you watch the videos a few times, it isn't so hard to follow their patterns. The first quilt I made with the ruler I used my normal 45mm rotary cutter and it was okay but then I realized that a 28mm works much better on those curves. I'm working on my third Sewkindofwonderful pattern now, Metro Medallion. You can't speed through these patterns but I love a challenge.

Melanie Rudy 05-06-2016 05:13 AM

I have made a lot of curved quilts with freehand techniques and loved doing them all. Curved quilts are much easier to do than they look. I see how this ruler will allow the curves to line up nicely from block to block for more uniform patterns. I like it and might be buying one myself (and this is saying a lot because I do not buy rulers lightly) :) Thank you for showing it to me.

costumegirl 05-06-2016 05:55 AM

I have one and like it - easy to use and many of their patterns are fresh and fun! :)

Onebyone 05-06-2016 06:42 AM

Nanaandpopa Thanks for posting your quilt picture, I love it and have to make one. I had enough reward points on Amazon to get the ruler free!

squires1042 05-06-2016 08:07 AM

Quick curve

I have this ruler and we did urban winter class with it it is very easy to use, just follow instructions. There are a lot of variations you can do including a quilt as you go version. Take a few scrap pieces and practice first, it takes the stress out of it.

Oh and yes it has a slot in it for the ruler, you dont use pins and it goes together easily,

The patterns have a little wiggle room in them and trim up well.

Most rulers have plenty of project and pattern options. Rare is the one trick pony ruler. Mfgrs. Understand that the tools need to have multiple uses.

I have made 2 quilts and a table runner with the Quick Curve ruler. There is a slot in the ruler just above the words on the ruler. I made the one that looks like a DWR and the urban 9 patch. I did have to read the directions a couple of time to wrap my head around how to trim the blocks. The curves are pretty easy to sew once you make a couple I did find that the best rotary cutter to use on the curve was a 28 MM one. The larger cutter didn't work as easily in the slot. Their patterns are beautiful.

I have this ruler and used it for one quilt. I was worth it for one time use. My quilt won Viewer's Choice at a local quilt show!

Muddle through and won best of show! Wow! That's some muddlen'! Lol!

gale mary 05-07-2016 03:20 PM

Yes, I have one.

I designed my own quilt with it. It makes a beautiful quilt and very easy to use your regular cutting blade with it.

stitch678 05-07-2016 03:21 PM

l wouldn't bother buying the ruler...l'd draw a template ( or 2) on cardboard, trace & cut w/scissors . Then l'd use it to trace on the fabric with misty fuse on the back...cut out with scissors & applique it on to the blocks.

quiltinghere 05-08-2016 03:52 AM

I bought this ruler because so many different type of quilted items can be made with totally different looks. Unfortunately, I haven't used it yet. Working on a block of the month ... during "MY" sewing/quilting time.

NanaandPapa1 :Gorgeous! I see why it won. You have inspired me. Thanks for all the information everyone. I think I need to order one!

That's a lot of work just to not buy the ruler.

Mary73162 05-09-2016 06:03 AM

We should all muddle so well---beautiful quilt!

QuiltnLady1 05-09-2016 10:28 AM

I have a similar ruler with more arcs (basically parts of circles with different radii) that I got at least 10 years ago -- similar to this one: http://smile.amazon.com/June-Tailor-...s=circle+ruler (I think JA's carries it) . I found the 28mm or 18mm rotary cutter works best when cutting the arcs (be careful not to run into the plastic as it can nick up the blade) . When sewing, remember you are in bias central with those arcs.
