Big Red -

Last year I did a Sham with a friends child who is 12 as well. We did a simple 10 inch block with petals and a center which were ironed on. I let her use decorative stitches around the edge of applique.

A whole quilt might be a bit labor intensive of this pattern but would be cute mixed with plain blocks and then tied. If you are interested in the pattern name - PM me and I will get it for you.

My grand daughter was 12 when I taught her the basics of quilt making. Actually, she'd never even started up a sewing machine prior to this experience (My daughter claims that "sewing skipped a generation" in our family ......lol). Anyways, I had my grand daughter make a rag quilt for her first project. That gave her experience in using acrylic rulers, rotary cutting, straight line sewing, etc. without the frustration of accurate seam matching. Just a suggestion

Charm packs are great for beginners - just sew the squares together :)
