Carpenter's Star, it goes together quickly, but looks great. I bought Debbie Maddy's pattern, but, I think Blank Fabrics has a free patterns.

Jenny Doan's 25" Big Block Star Quilt. It's awesome and easy and you make 12 blocks and have a king size quilt. And you use 2 of the same layer cakes and a cream layer cake with the same cream color for background material. Go to YouTube and type in: Jenny Doan Big Block Star Quilt and scroll down about 4 or 5 videos and you will find it. You make four triangles out of two 10" squares. It is sooooooooo easy and they are big blocks like you want! And order some border fabric. But you need 2 layer cakes of the main fabric!! She is having a 'daily deal' on a lot of layer cakes right now at www.missouristarquiltco.com/

Try a YELLOW BRICK ROAD PATTERN. I made this CRIB size top in three hours, and I'm more or less a novice yet. Its made with 6 fat quarters.

I think often that the real stunners are done with great colors. They do not have to be intricately pieced. Just make in colors they love. I made a d4p and a simple log cabin variation alternating blocks quilt and it was very cool. All done in different scale prints in black and white with a bright coral accent. My brother LOVED it. And the girls wanted one too.

The checker block in the center of the one block was the cut from the d4p and I replaced it for a solid coral block in the original d4p to give the quilt continuity. Very easy and quick.

Shifted log cabin - gives the effect of curves if you do the blending right, and it's so easy to put together if you chain stitch. Here's one that I made for my guest bed. You just have to do the math so that the blocks come out to the right size for a bed quilt (or just add a couple of borders if they're short).

Haven't made it yet but The Big Star Quilt on the Missouri Quilt Co. tutorial on you tube looks really quick and easy. The blocks are 25". It's next on my list.

PenniF 01-08-2013 10:39 AM

I have made many many quick quilts using any interesting block ... i usually pick an intricate or more difficult one....and enlarge to scale i want for the final size i want....using say 6" squares instead of 2". They make beautiful quilts - and you get to use a block that you might not want to do too often as a 12 x 12 cuz they're a lot of work. Good luck !!

Dodie 01-08-2013 11:06 AM

my favorite is the warm wishes pattern the pattern was originally a linus project so sure you can find it on the internet if I was home I would send it to you

JaniceP 01-08-2013 11:34 AM

I agree the disappearing 9 patch makes a beautiful quilt but looks like you have spent a lot of time with it.

WHEW!!! The past couple of months have been overwhelming! Since Thanksgiving, my daughter (19 years old and autistic) had to have major surgery, I bought AND wrapped all of the Christmas presents, went to three Christmas dinners, plus made it though four (FOUR!!) birthdays, with two more to go in the next week! Oh.....and I also made a quilt for my nephew!

Here's my problem.....I'm still trying to finish up a quilt I started for my niece for her birthday (which was October 23). I have a quilt in mind I'm going to make for my oldest sister for her birthday in March, and I think it will go together fairly quickly. The problem is, my other sister's birthday is in June. I want to make a quilt for her as well, but I'm obviously pressed for time. Do any of you have any suggestions for a quilt that will go together fast, that's fairly easy, but doesn't look like it's quick and easy? I don't want her to feel like I've just thrown something together, even though that's pretty much what I'll probably have to do. Any and all help would be very much appreciated! :c)

My standard answer------WARM WISHES

OK, I gotta ask.....is your brother single? LOL!

Turning Twenty is a good one. I made 16 quilts (throw size) for Christmas one year. They go together pretty fast.

Missouri quilt co. also shows on with 10 inch layer cakes that looks easy and nice. I also love the D9P. Hoe you find something and show us pictures please.

Totally agree, have made a couple of quilts using this pattern, one I have on display at my craft stall and I would be a millionnaire by now if a got a dollar for every comment I got about it.

nellie 01-08-2013 05:22 PM

do you what to do a quilt as you ?,where you don,t needto do all those steps .maybe doing a quilt as you go kinda quilt .you can find some patterns in www.youtube.com

IBQUILTIN 01-08-2013 06:54 PM

Bricks and Mortar. 7 X 4 rectangles with a 1/2 inch sashing strip. Add one 1/2 block at the end of the first row, beginning of second, etc; to make a brick pattern. I used 7 1/2 blocks X 18 rows for a twin. Really is pretty in scrappy flannel for a little boy

I love Warm Wishes, it is fast, easy and makes an impression.....just Google it and see what it looks like...I think you might like it....

Carpenter's star is simple HST-----------no need to buy any pattern

Donna, for something quick and easy and is striking, in my opinion, is the Take 5 quilt. It takes 5/8 yd of 5 different fabrics...If you want to make it larger, just increase yardage to 7/8 yd, and cut more blocks... It makes up so fast. Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents..

I aggre with Carpenter's star, although I have never done one, it is on my list. I think they look very nice.

Pamela M 01-09-2013 03:03 AM

Quiltforme (on this site) has done one she called "pinwheel disappearing 4 patch" and she gave the coloured photos of how to do it. I did a square to try it and it is easy. I did big squares about 16" (they get cut a few times) and it looks like a lot of work but it isn't. I would copy it to here but don't know how; but if you type it in on the search area up on the top of the page it will come up.

THANKS so much, Red! I basically had to have them custom built because no one had what I was looking for. So I went to a discount home improvement store and they helped me design my own. You won't believe it to look at it, but they are basically three simple bookshelves stacked on top of one another!!! I just had them add solid doors on the bottom unit, and doors with glass windows on the top unit. What really set them off was having our contractor add crown molding and side panels to hide the seams of the three bookshelves. I had glass shelves made for the top unit, and the top two units have electrical outlets built in for our cable boxes and anything else I might need power for. I'm so proud of what we ended up with. I've never redecorated anything before!!!!

quiltmom04 01-09-2013 05:21 AM

Well, if you have a quilt "in mind" for your sister's birthday in March, in sounds like you haven't started it . That only gives you 2 months. Lets assume you finish it by her birthday, you still have at least 2 months to the next sister's birthday, so I would suggest you make the same design only in different colors.

I just did the Delectable Mountains by Elenor Burns. It took me two days to piece and looks quite complicated but very easy.

Love all the "Swirly Girl" patterns, they are very easy to do, and definitely don't look it!

GrannieAnnie 01-09-2013 08:21 AM

Actually any p patch or 4 patch or 5 patch or 7 patch block could be enlarged for a one block quilt. Again as stated by several on this thread the fabric choice are more important than the pattern. And for the most part (aside from floral motifs) the fabric makes the block masculine or feminine. Most of these patterns -------the simpler ones------are just squares and HST-----generally fairly quick to do.

klgreene 01-09-2013 10:08 AM

I agree with EasyPeezy, the Double Slice tutorial on Missouri Quilt Co. is an easy, but very quick pattern. Made with Layer cakes, or just 10" squares. I just finished one before Christmas with 10 " Christmas squares from our Christmas guild party Dec. 11. So you can see you would have lots of time. And it was fun. I plan on making another with a set of Layer Cakes since the colors are all coordinated for me. The Christmas one was busy, but fun.

KarynneStorm 01-09-2013 10:34 AM

I will throw in my vote for the disappearing 9 patch as well. It really does go together easily. I am currently working on a similar problem for my step daughter. I am making it as a Mock Log Cabin block, on point. uses less blocks and the triangles take much less time to cut and add to the rows. Good luck.

Remember, fabric choice makes all the difference.

sewNso 01-09-2013 02:41 PM

did you find one? judy's 3rd mystery quilt here on line that the ladies are just finishing up makes a beautiful quilt. it's in the BOM section check it out.

That would solve all your problems of "favoring" one sister over the other. LOL

Hi. I like the Rail Fence or a 9 Patch. Either one you choose will tell them they are special and how much you care. A gift quilt is a heart gift . Lucky people. Marvel

Look at the pattern "Jewel Box" by Janice Pope, aka Anything But Boring. It is a disappearing 9 patch but looking at her layout it really looks impressive. Simple. Matter a fact when you go to her website it is part of her header. http://anythingbutboring.com/

Jennifer 01-10-2013 06:54 PM

I enlarged this Rainy Day quilt pattern by adding extra blocks. I cut, pieced and completed the top this past weekend. I chained pieced the crap out of it. I did a 7 x 8 block layout and my quilt top is 70x80 inches I believe or around that area. I have not actually measured it. Here is the blog where I found the pattern

I have my eye on this pattern called Nature Rhythms by Johnny Karwan:
http://www.clothworkstextiles.com/pd...ythmsquilt.pdf

I'm thinking it would look great even if I simplify by eliminating the gray strips and using squares of Asian fabrics. Seems to me this is a really nice pattern for some of those prints I don't know what to do with.

This is my go to - it isn't too old fashioned for me (a lot of the quick ones are for me) and your focus fabric can really make it - here it is in Hawaiian prints...

I made it in Spiderman fabrics and it looked totally different. It goes together VERY quick. Caution though - not sure if they updated the pattern or not but the last two borders were not correct so don't cut those out right away to be on the safe side - or draw it out and do the math to make sure it's good to go. ;)
