I've used the post-it notes too. I've also used Dr. Scholl's moleskin. It has an adhesive backing that doesn't gum up your machine top when you have to remove it.
I had bought a special adhesive backed thick tape at a quilt shop to use as a guide. It was so expensive in comparison to the post it notes. An unnecessary expense, but I didn't know about the other options.

Ahhhhh... 3M would be happy with yet another use of their notes

I bought a generic for my Viking and only paid about $20...I forget where I got it but was an online merchant. I have used it a lot and haven't had any problems with the generic.

I actually took the metal guide off of my 1/4 foot because it kept getting caught on other seam allowances going under it. I learned where to move my needle to get my scant seam just using the side of the presser foot.
