I've only made one quilt so far and am working on another for my daughter, but my son wants one and I can't find a design that doesn't look too "girly" for him. Can anyone please give me some more ideas to see if he would approve of any of them. Thanks so much.

I'm thinking about a puzzle quilt with manly colors, of course, for my 11 yo grandson.

He finally likes one!! Thanks! the only size i could find on the computer is really small... can a pattern be found for one that might be able to cover a twin size bed?

Charlee 01-02-2010 05:54 AM

You can enlarge the quilt by making more blocks, or by adding borders. You could make the blocks larger, but that a lot of work! :) Welcome to the board!

Barb_MO 01-02-2010 07:12 AM

what pattern did he pick. Maybe it wouldn't be too hard to enlarge.

You could always make it bigger.

I am attaching a copy of the baseball quilt I made from a pattern in Thimbleberry called Bedtime Story. You could actually use any pieced block pattern and just fussy cut the center motif, with something for a little boy. I made this baseball quilt for my 9 year old nephew.

Where did you pick up that pattern, am computer challenged ??

This is the quilt I made for grandson Ben who will be 10 this year. Block is very simple, 4 1/2 strips of a light and a dark to make the simple pinwheel blocks, trimed the pinwheels to 8". For the darks I used many different "boy" type fabrics, sports, pretzels, candy, etc. He loves it. You can make as many blocks as you like to make a larger quilts.

I also made several girlie quilts in the same pattern but with more girlie fabrics. I've also made a smaller block for baby quilts. May in Jersey

I'm getting ready to start a pinwheel quilt for my 8yo ds. He absolutely loves quilts though and will sit there looking at them with me and telling me which ones are pretty. He likes the pinwheel pattern, the log cabin pattern, and the three rail fence pattern...oh and overhaul Sam too!

It might be that what appeals to a boy most is not so much the design, but the choice of fabrics. If you can pick ones that play to his individual interests (sports, animals), and then put together a color combination that's not too juvenile, that might work.

littlehud 01-02-2010 10:01 AM

Both those quilts are cool. I think either one would work for an 11 year old boy.

brookemarie19 01-02-2010 10:22 AM

Both quilts are awesome! They also look simple enough that I might be able to pull it off... hehe. Thanks so much for all of your help today, I might actually be able to make him one after all.

MadQuilter 01-02-2010 10:34 AM

IMHO, the thing about "boy" quilts is not so much in the pattern but in the colors and the fabric choices.

Thanks for posting the square in a square baseball quilt. I am going to borrow that approach on a baseball quilt I have to make.

I made a quilt for my son years ago which he loved. It was a simple log cabin made from corduroy - black, gray, red and cream. Fast, easy, looked great and was not girly in the least. The quilt is now about 25 years old and I just realized I still have the leftover corduroy! Time to get rid of it.

For a boy that age...the puzzle pieces made out of deer, fish, sports fabrics that aren't juvenile would be fun too. Kind of a puzzle withing a puzzle design :D:D:D

shaverg 01-02-2010 02:04 PM

It is definitely about the fabric. My nephews baseball quilt was actually a really frilly victorian fabric. Does not even look close to the picture in the book. Although worked out great for a boys quilt once I changed the fabric.

I copied this picture of a quilt that someone posted a few weeks back. I'll soon be making a quilt for my 13 year old grandson and thought I might copy it with different fabrics.

I've bought a focus fabric that is allover bright colored dice. He loves to play games, so I thought that would be a good starting point. The rail fence part will be done in coordinating prints in the jewel colors of the dice.

I agree that with boys, and kids in general, it's all about the fabric prints, not so much the quilt pattern.

my 11yr old grandson requested a black and white print, so to keep it from getting boring i will topstitch it with red thread and border with black white and red print and bind with red.

When my grandsons were of that age, they were all excited to share with grandma what sports they were in and my daughter had even decorated their rooms with their favorite sports themes so I did a snowball quilt for each with fabric showing their favorite sport in the snowball. They were a real hit. It is simple and turns out great for boys.

KarenSimon 01-05-2010 10:55 AM

I don't think a pattern is necessarily "too boy" or too girl". I think the fabric makes the difference.

Ragann63 01-05-2010 11:20 AM

Not so much problem with the pattern. The trick is the colors and fabric choice. Both of my children (girl and boy) got a Mother's Dream block quilt for their HS graduations in their school colors. My daughter's is red, white and blue, my son's just white and blue. I used traditional prints with hers and chose a navy and white hand dyed batik for his. They look totally different and his looks quite masculine. Whatever you do, I am sure he will cherish. Good luck!

You can enlarge the quilt by making more blocks, or by
adding borders. You could make the blocks larger,
but that a lot of work!
===========================

NOPE< this one is easy. If your printer won't enlarge anything,
go to Staples and have each one enlarged. This sounds like a neat thing
for a boy's quilt, and I plan on doing it for a new born Great Grandson.

I can simply outline a simple kid's puzzle (Texas Cowboys and Horses?)
and then enlarge them. I think that maybe putting bright colored pieces
on a dark background would do the job. Maybe one for a floor quilt, and
later a large one for a big boy's bed.

Just to note-if you are doing the puzzle quilt, that curves can be tricky to start with, especially keeping your seam allowances correct. Ask me how I know! :/

DONK 01-05-2010 03:45 PM

I i can get apic to post this one was real simple.

Does he like John Deer tractors. There is plenty of that out there. Wild life would also be nice.

A few years ago I was in a quandary as to what pattern to use for my grandson that age. I ended up using Snail Trails, and he loved it! I really enjoyed making it. Would send picture but he has the quilt!

Have made several quilts for grandsons. Real trick is to find fabric that is not girly. I try to use their favorite colors.

Thought I would post a couple more quilts that the grandsons liked and were real quick and easy. The choice of fabrics and colors were the big selling point with them.

Did you follow the instructions for attaching a file when you hit the 'Reply' button? Once you find the picture in your computer just double click the image. Good luck.

I love all the pictures... i can see better if i can actually "see" it unlike my husband. I really like the way you did the bat outline when quilting... soo cool, can't wait until I can do that.
