I agree with the Warm Wishes suggestion for the fabrics you are planning. Really works well for any quilt that you want to use a focus fabric.

How big is the print? That would determine the pattern for me. You want the pieces to be big enough to show off the pattern of the fabrics. I would think the fabrics should be "male" stuff. Men don't outgrow cars, space and sports (and more things that I can't think of at this moment). When you find the fabric, then find the pattern that will show off the prints.

I might do a search for car quilts or space quilts and see what strikes your fancy. You might enlist the child to help you look.

How about an I Spy quilt? Kids love them.

"To Eternity and Beyond" or "Space Odyessy", both by Wendy Sheppard might appeal to a seven year old.

I made our grandson an airport quilt which he just loves. He drew the picture of how he wanted it to look, I blew it up to quilt size on an overhead projector and then appliqued everything together. We kept getting new ideas as we went and really had fun doing it. He's using it as much on the floor to play with as he is on the bed! Definitely a win win situation!

I would think any pattern that left the planet, star fabric in fairly large pieces (like meyert's above) would be great, as he will probably notice the fabric more than the piecing.

if you plan on doing planets, stars and UFOs I can't help there....but I recently finished a Lego quilt for my grandson (11yo) and he really liked it!...If you go on Pinterest and type in Lego quilts you will see what others have made. They are really cute and they even made a stamp or stencil for the Lego logo.

I would agree to ask him. I just remade a baby quilt into a Giant Baby Quilt for my 8.5 year old grandson. He loved it and wanted one to cover from his feet to his head. He won't use it forever, but I'm guessing a few more years.

I made a Darth Vader throw for my son, he is 46; but once a Star Wars fan always a Star Wars fan. It uses 2.5 squares to form the figure and it is super fun watching it take shape. It is a freebie on Craftsy.
