To quilt around border or not?

Almost done w/this Moda neutrals lap quilt. I have the darker turquoise binding ready] to place for a one inch wide binding. I quilted inside the square boxes and also did the starter up/down straight stitch seams across the disappearing nine patch quilt.

Ok will give it a go- just not a pro at it yet and don't want to ruin it.

Sorry more work definately quilt the border.

Nicely done! I'd quilt the border too. You could follow along the pattern in kind of a chevron design. It's not too wide, so you could probably get away with 2-3 rows of it. Or you could continue with how you have the center quilted.

I am with all the others, quilt the border. I always quilt my borders, no matter how small they are. Gives a finished look.

Yes, do piano key in center of each of those obtuse triangles...easy peasy...will be great.

Never done piano keys .Should be all same length or varied? I am just trying to avoid having an un-even border for binding.

Yes, you need to quilt something in the border to keep the layers in place. Job well done so far.

don't short yourself on your FMQ, the blocks look great and I'm sure you'll do a wonderful job in the border too...

coopah 06-05-2015 05:23 AM

Nothing wrong with your quilting which is great, IMHO. It would look odd to have the center of the quilt with stitching and the borders without, so go for it! Share again when done...you know we're your best cheering section!

Agree that you should quilt the border. How about figure 8's. They are similar to what you have done in the blocks and not too hard. You did a great job so far!

I did end up doing the piano key border now on to the binding. I do have a huge confession though. My Babylock Melody did the quilting design in boxes. I don't trust my FMQ ( stipples only-ha) The Melody has several quilting stitches :p

Quilting the borders keeps them from puckering and looking unfinished. Yes- quilt the orders.

On some of mine if I can't think of how to quilt the border I just go right up the center with one of the pretty stitches on my machine. One I did not care for but the others turned out really nice.

If I had to wait until I was a pro before I could quilt my quilts, I'd have quit long ago. We're our own worst critics.
