Anybody else use sheets for the back of their quilts? I buy the 200 thread count mainstays from Walmart, less than $3.00 for twin size. Also if I am going to need a lot of one color. Somewhere I read not to but I find they work great for me. My mom always used sheets in her sewing projects.

I have never used a sheet but several ladies in a quilting group I below to all use sheets without problems. It would definitely be handy in not piecing together the backing.

I've used a sheet for backing several times. It costs a lot less and they work great. I also get mine from Walmart.

I've done the same when in a pinch.
Sometimes, the color I want for a backing isn't available, so I just go to Walmart or sometimes Macy's (when sheets are on sale) and buy a couple of those. I usually buy 2 or 3 for a backup just in case.

I have used them before, too. In fact, my favorite lap blanket is a scrappy quilt I used an old sheet for backing. Covering up with it is like crawling into a comfortable bed.

I think hand quilting can be difficult on sheets because they are woven more tightly than quilting fabric.

I use sheets a lot or I buy fleece throws! Both work well for me!

Have you tried Ikea for your fleece throws, they are lovely and fine and soooo cheap, Ikea opened a store near Malaga back end of last year, and I picked up a couple of their baby fleeces, so soft!!

I always use sheets for quilt backings. I also get them at WalMart. If I need a specific color, I buy white and die or paint it. Works great!

While having my 'bru' I checked out Ikea for you, they have a branch in Leeds, not sure how far this is from you, or Manchester, close to the city centre.

If you go on line check out 'Irma' childrens fleece, soft aqua colour, size 1.30 x 1.70cm - £1.59!!! This is the one I bought. Its quite thin, so would be great for backing.

Also they have 'Polarvide' available black, blue, green, red and while, 170 x 130 - grand price of:----£2.59!!!

So glad you all posted about this. I purchased a vintage cabbage rose sheet at a sale, and thought it'd be really neat to back a reproduction style quilt with. Glad to know there are others out there doing this with success! :)

I am also glad to hear others use sheets. I hand quilted both of mine with no problem. In fact some of the fabrics for the top were woven tighter.

I have. I love the Martha Stewart ginghams that K-mart used to carry.
I prefer to hand quilt and trying to get thru sheets is awful. I would recommend only machine quilting.

Thanks Izy....Leeds and Manchester are about an hour away and I've also been told theres an Ikea in Nottingham, which is also about an hour away I think.....so that will be a good excuse for a day out won't it?

I go to my local thrift store and buy queen and king size flat sheets for $2-3 each. I've used them both for backing and for blocks.

I just recently finished a John Deere baby blanket for my nephew's new baby to be born in July and I used a fleece throw for the backing. It was a plaid with green, yellow, white and blue.

Me too Shirley! If you look at the quilts I made for 4 of my kids for Christmas (I think I put pictures on here)...the blocks were made totally from sheets and I think I backed all of them with fleece!

Make sure when you plan your trip to Ikea, that you take the biggest vehicle you can, and empty out the boot of all unnecessary objects, I can guarantee you will be loaded up and your right to plan a full day, it will take you that long to see everything - its fantastic for bargains, loads of storage solutions etc.......wish I was coming with you, oh! and have a meal in the cafe, great food, very good value too!!

All I used to use were the sheets at Wal Mart. Don't use any of the 120 thread counts though. I used one on a quilt I put in a fair. It won third place but the judges said that it needed a better quality backing. I have found a good place to buy batting and backing. It is quality stuff at very reasonable prices. Marshall Dry Goods in Batesville Ark. Look it up. They have a website.
