I am currently working on my first hand quilted quilt. This will be a QAUG project. I'm fairly new at quilting so am learning new things all the time. I am currently trying to choose a batting for this quilt. I'm down to either a medium loft wool batting or an 80/20 cotton poleyster low loft batting. I've hand quilted samples of both and seem to have the same results with both. So my question is how do these battings compare in washing (can you even wash the wool batting or does it need to be dry cleaned). Which batting stands up to use better? What has been your expierences with these battings?

wool batting washes just fine, personally i LOVE the wool batts, and i love the loft. they wash beautifully, fluff up and make a very soft, fluffy quilt. the cotton/poly blends are ok too, but do not get loftier...they stay very thin (the low-loft one) so, if you want a flat, stiffer outcome i would choose that one, if you want fluffier/heaftier, warmer quilt go with the wool. it is really a personal choice...personally i never use low-loft poly batting (unless its for a wall hanging i want to be flat) i like lofty, lots of warmth, body...but that's just me, not everyone shares my (likes)

Me I always like warm and natural. I like the antique look when they wash. I never got into loft.

I started with poly batting but it didn't take me long to realize I didn't like it. I tried cotton and don't think I'll use anything else. I went with the high loft poly and hand quilted a queen size. That in itself was a nightmare but after I finished it, the dang thing is so heavy you can't move under it. That's when I tried the cotton. Love it.

Absolutely LOVE wool batting for hand quilting.

Warm and natural is my choice. I machine quilt though.

I use Warm and Natural. I love the feel of it, and how warm my quilts are when they are done. I have never tried machine quilting, with the exception of a couple of little Dolly quilts. I quilt all mine by hand and they come out great.

i've asked this question so many times & never got a response...........the quilt i made w/ w&n many years ago was so heavy i couldn't stand it on my feet! does w& n come in diff/ weights,or do i just have sensitive feet?[do have fibro& arthritis in my feet]

I recently read one of those Q&A sections in a magazine where the quilting staff talked about batting. Many used wool because of the way it handles. One likes to use Warm and Natural for wall hangings and prefers Hobbs Cotton Blend for hand quilting. I think if you found something you like, just pick one and go with it. Try the other kind next time. (Siounds like there will be a next time)

had the same problem w/w&n!by the time i finished the queen-size,i couldn't stand the weight on my feet.i am trying to figure out how to cut it down w/o totally ruining the pattern..........it'sa star log cabin,love the pattern& thought it turned out great,i was SO proud of it !any suggesstions onhow to cut it down w/o it looking butchered?
