Which Quilt Batting to Use for a Memorial Quilt, Which will be hung
 

I am in the process of starting a Memorial Quilt for my niece who's oldest son died at age 29 from a bad batch of Opioids. She has asked to have 30+ 10 x 10" photos on the quilt, which I determined to be 75" x 90" and will hang on a wall.

Because of the large number of photos, I plan to piece, sandwich and quilt the quilt and then attach the photos (machine sew them down).

My question is, which 80/20 batting (or other batting) would you recommend for this type of quilt?

I don’t think it will really matter what batting you use. Just don’t go “cheap”. I’ve used Warm & Natural, Hobbs 80/20 and Dream Select on large quilts I’ve hung without any problems.

What qualities do you want from the batting?
​​​I have read repeatedly that wool batting is best to show off the quilting on a quilt that will hang -- and wool is lighter than cotton.

Art quilters often use two layers: wool next to the top, W&N or something similar behind. The wool gives more definition to quilting. Sometimes felt is added as a third layer to give stability and help it hang straight.

IMO, because it's going to hang on a wall, and it sounds like the focus will be on the pictures and not on the quilting, I would go with a single layer of wool. It is lightweight and won't put as much drag on a large quilt.
