I started quilting a large quilt and my plan was to fold the backing over to the front for the binding. Well somehow the quilt-backing shifted and now one of the edges is too short to turn over. only have about 1/2 " of backing. but have alot on the other sides. And I had spray basted and pinned it. EERRRRRRRR. Should the binding be cut on the bias or could I trim off the edges an make a straight binding? I have set this quilt aside for months now , because I am going to have to do extra work. I doubt you would get enough from trimming the edges. If it is a straight sided quilt, bias isn't necessary, I don't use bias, I use straight strips on all mine. another idea, could you sew boarders on, making them large enough to fold over and use as your binding like you were going to do with the backing material? That would give u an easier way to attach and give a cute look.

For a quilt with a straight edge, I always cut my bindings on the grain. I think a bias cut binding would only be necessary where you are doing scallops and curves.

I always use bias binding , only on wall hangings and table runners do I use straight binding.

The only time I cut my binding on the bias is when I am going around curves (like a scallop). Otherwise I always cut in the straight of grain.

Me too. I use bias on bed quilts for durability, but smaller items that don't get handled as much can be bound with straight binding.
