My friend who is just beginning to quilt has a friend who is a teacher who would like her students to make a quilt during Black History Month next Feb. She would like the blocks to be 12". The patterns we need are:
Monkey Wrench, Wagon Wheel, Cross Roads, Flying Geese, Sho Fly, Bear Paw, Drunken Path, a simple Star and a Bow Tie. I have searched the links that have been on msg board and have been unable to find most of them. Any suggestions? My husband can draft them to a larger size if I can find samples for him. Thanks for your help.

It's a nice idea to make a quilt, but I recently read that quilts weren't actually used on the Underground Railroad. I would tie the quilts into a geometry lesson.

A Gees Bend quilt would be easier and more true to history. Quilts for the underground railroad is folklore. Gees Bends quilts are real and have a real tracable history.

Hmmm sounds like all fo the blocks from the Quilt in a Day underground rail road book. How old are these students?

I agree about the Gees Bend quilts. This is a community of people who can trace their history back and along with it their quilts. Black history isn't just about leaders and extraordinary achievement. It is more about how people survived such adversity. Like women's history, it is everyday people who's stories are real.

Please read the comments from last week's post on this subject. However, I doubt you can dissuade the teacher from doing the project but at least give her the info.
