When does one of our creations go from being a pretty blanket to a pretty quilt? Is it only if it is quilted?

I think "technically speaking" a quilt is layered and stitched.... but what do "they" know

a blanket is usually a single layer, although I have seen two layer blankets. As for a quilt, it is a top until it is quilted.

I've always have understood that a quilt is three layers, top, some type of batting and a bottom layer. It can be tied, hand stitched or machine stitched and still be a quilt. A Crazy quilt has only two layers so in reality is not classified a quilt for a quilt show.

To be a quilt it has three layers (top, bottom and backing) put together in any way that holds the three together. Crazy quilts really do have three layers for they are usually pieced on a foundation that would serve as a middle linder. I however put a lightweight batting or flannel between mine sometimes depending on the fabric used.
