While traveling west on 64 in Kentucky last year, we observed these darling blocks painted on various barns along the way. Is there a story here or something interesting besides just the beauty I saw? Just curious, I've seen it in Country Woman Magazine. I don't remember the issue. I'll search it and get back, meanwhile.........

Mrs. Pete, you forgot something...

Here is some info on how they got started. This is the site for the ones in NC. They evidently have the largest amount of these. I am going home to NC and this is one of the things I plan on doing.

My understanding from a television show "Amerca's Heartland" was that people started painting these on older barns so raise awareness of the history of the barn and also to ward people off from tearing them down. Also, so that us quilt folks have something to look at if we didn't bring handwork for the car ride! LOL

Quilt in a Day has things on the barn blocks. Free video that shows the blocks - different one for each month and shows the blocks on various barns all over the US.
Eleanor also gives some history about the blocks.

Oh Shaverg, it's almost under my nose !!! But, I don't take my nose up in the mountains much. I'll be looking for these. I missed the television features but I'll be looking at the TV Guide more. This is such a thrill. Aren't they gorgeous! Thanks so much. Ruth

The quilts here in KY are painted on plywood sheets and then the power companies mount them on the barns for the extension offices. They are a project by the County Extension Offices--we also have a quilt trail. They are done by various groups, students, homemakers groups, etc. My aunt lives in an assisted living apartment here in Richmond and they have painted one of them. It really is nice driving around and seeing them. Thank you mrspete for your nice comments. I will tell my extension office when I go next Monday.
