A helpful clue I got from someone else on line was to have a smooth board. (She used 2) I roll the quilt around the board to control it as I pin baste it, so I don't need a huge space for basting. Many of you you alread know about using this, but perhaps a few don't.

Sharon Schamber uses a board to hand baste her quilts. Here is a link to her Youtube videos demonstrating the method:

It would work for pin basting too, I think.

I became so much more productive when I found this technique.
