Hi Everyone,

I am making a quilt for my bil's upcoming wedding. The squares are from a neighborhood block exchange. I only have 9 blocks that are 12 1/2" unfinished. The blocks are colors I am not hooked on, but colors that my bil and his fiance like. I thought of putting them in rows of 3 with 5" sashing in between the sqaures and 5" sashing in between the rows. Then I would do a border with the same sashing fabric of 5" all the way around. This leaves me with a 20" border on top and bottom and a 16" border on the sides.

I know that how we do these are based on what we like, but do you think it would look funny to have that much border?

Any help would be appreciated. THe quilt will be about 88X96.

Could you do a fourth row of block, horizontally? That way, you could still get the width w/o so much border, or are you trying to avoid doing more blocks for whatever reason?

That may be a lot of sashing and border area for that size quilt/blocks... can you lay out the blocks on the sashing fabric and then lay the border fabric to the side? Sometimes actually seeing it laid out gives you a better idea of the proportions :D:D:D

Or maybe make two borders on the outside, one say 2", the other 3" to break it up some? Or even "frame" the blocks with one color and then add the rest in sashing? DTMS?

I did think of doing some snowball blocks, but that would change only the border of the width. The other idea that just popped into my head is to do 3 snowball blocks with 2 squares on one row, and then the next row do 3 blcoks with 2 snowball quilts, and keep alternating. THat might be a possiblity.

What are the blocks? Can you just place more sqaures in that aren't from the neighborhood to fill it in?

I made a wedding quilt similar to this a couple of years ago with 9 12" Ohio Star blocks. I framed each block to make them 15 1/2" (unfinished), sashed between and all around with 5" strips, then finished with 10" side borders and 15" top and bottom. The quilting was very simple - big zigzags edge to edge and I think it looked OK. Good enough for me to hand it over with pleasure anyway. The finished size was 85"x95". I'm sure your bil will appreciate your quilt anyway you finish it because you made it with love for them.
