I have a 6" border around a twin size quilt. Is it necessary to quilt the border? Is there any logic to quilting or not quilting?
|
I would do a simple pattern in the border. Just my personal preference not to leave that much space unquilted.

That is a long and wide area, the batting can stretch or bunch in this long of an area.
Most batting has a quilting requirement, if it is 6" for example, then you would have to quilt atleast one line of quilting across the border every 6" :D:D:D |
I would do some quilting in a 6 inch border. That's just a little bigger than I would want to leave unquilted.

Yip -- me, too. Besides all the problems you'd run into if you didn't, it just plain looks better to quilt the border.
My batting says it can be quilted 10" apart without problems. You could do a straight line from the quilt to the outer edge every 10" or so (check your batting instructions). I don't think I'd like that idea, but would do in a pinch. |
Thank you all for the sound logic. The primary print is butterflies. I guess we'll find out if I can fmq butterflies in the border. I'm still a beginner at fmq. Wish me luck.

you could just do a simple curved line with swirls or loops as you go along.
|
If you don't want to quilt the area you could tie it with a color that would compliment your quilt.
|
definately do some quilting in that wide of a border.
|
I would definitely quilt a 6 inch border to keep the batting in place.

your batting will tell you if you have to quilt it or not, but you need to at least tack it down here and there no matter what type of batting you use.
the package will tell you if you need to quilt every 2-4" or if you can quilt up to 10" apart, so if you have the every 10" (warm & natural) then every 10" or less you need to have quilting. if you are using a 2"-4" quilting batt (hobbs heirloom) then every 2-4" of the quilt needs to be quilted. and the package will also tell you if it is a good choice for tied quilts. |
