I had 3 quilts, from last years county fair square contest, to raffle for donation to the Yolo county food bank. I search for good quilt care instructions, but couldn't find anything suitable to add to a thank you note that I will give with each quilt when I draw the winners tonight. I may be lacking something, but thought some member might want to print this. I did note several people had inquired and you could add/subtract to it for giving with your own quilt gifts. QUILT CARE INSTRUCTIONS

There are many tips for caring for your quilt, but these will probably be the most concise and useful.

1. Never dry clean your quilt and avoid displaying in bright sunlight.

2. Avoid letting pets on your quilt because of hair and dander, they will get very dirty fast and require more washing, and also cats especially can claw your quilt.

3. If you display it folded, you should frequently refold to avoid deep creases that are difficult to get out

4. All of the fabrics have hopefully been washed prior to being made into a square, but some quilters don’t and if those fabrics are reds (most common) or other fabrics that tend to bleed the could ruin your entire quilt. Because of this be sure to use a shout color catcher when washing for the first time and if it comes out clean you can be assured it will not bleed. Your quilt is probably 100% cotton so always wash in cold water with a very mild detergent like dreft, woolite, or orvus. Fill washer with water and agitate detergent before adding quilt, then let quilt soak for about ½ hour. Use your hands to push it down and make sure none of the quilt is dry and sticking up. It is ok to agitate on gentle for about 4 minutes. NEVER ADD CHLORINE BLEACH

5. If you like the antique look you can dry in the dryer on low heat, but if you prefer a flat look lay 2-3 flat sheets out on a floor and spread and smooth the quilt and thoroughly dry on both sides. Never hang to dry because it will stretch the quilt out of shape or lay it outside because it will probably fade.

If the quilt is for a child,

I would make the quilt so it could tolerate this care:

1) Wash in warm or cool water, on a gentle cycle. Use a non-bleach detergent.

2) Dry in dryer on low to medium heat until barely dry. Or hang on line to dry.

3) Use until worn out.
