I use clamps from Home Depot. I squeeze the handle and clamp onto my glass top dining table. The edge is about 2 or 2-1/2" thick. They are black with orange things at the end. Do not damage table or fabrics. I have used them for many years.

I bought this style clamp as well and they work great. My table is not as thick as yours but there is no damage to quilt or table.

If you have an everything .99 cents and above store they should have them. I bought mine there in the hardware supple section. They're great. They're black with orange tips. Also they have them in different sizes.

I've used the smaller version of these in the past for a 2" opening. I imagine you can find them cheaper at HF or even Lowes.
