Quilt cleaning help????

I was given a quilt from a friend that her mother had been working on and took sick. There was pins in it and of course there are now rust spots, I also found small little blood spots where she must of pricked her finger with the needle as it is all done by hand. I was going to donate it, but not sure if I can get those out and if I should wash it prior if I do get those spots out. Any help would be greatly appreciated on how to get the stains out without damaging this old quilt. Thanks!

Try putting hydrogen peroxide on a couple of the spots. May have to retreat.

Use cold water to get the blood out-hot water may set the stain. Not sure about the rust. I think there have been other posts on rust stains in the past but I can't remember the suggested solutions!

Someone told me to use Lemon juice[fresh] and lay it out in the sun. I don't remember if it worked or not. Too long ago. LOL

Just don't do as I did. Put quilt in washing machine and broke it. When the quilt was full of water it would not spin and broke the machine also would not drain.

hydrogen peroxide should take the blood out - but if its really really really old, maybe not. It will lighten the stain up.

Years ago RIT used to make a fabric rust remover but i am not sure if they still do. It would be found in the same section where RIT dye and other RIT laundry products are.

I have also used Whink rust stain remover. I think that one is found in the automotive section of stores. It works on getting rusty tool stains out of car upholstery and carpeting. I believe it works on any colored fabric, Just test it first!

There is a product by a company called Carbona called stain devils and it is specifically for rust and perspiration stains. It is a small bottle and I think I bought it at a grocery store. Website www.carbona.com

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. Will try them and let you know if they work. Too pretty of a quilt to let these nasty little spots win.

I've used Whink for rust stains successfully. I'm pretty sure I didn't get it in the automotive section - probably somewhere in laundry isle.
