Can anyone suggest a good quilt pattern for a male college student? I have been trying to figure out the easiest and best pattern to use. Would really appreciate input on this! TIA

I made my friend's son a rag quilt out of homespun. Every time I see him he thanks me again for his hug from home.

Warm Wishes is easy.

Some one on another post had a quilt out of men's shirts. think the post was called shirt tails.

I have been saving my hubby's shirts for our kids.
Love the pattern she used in that post.

My college aged guys like geometric patterns and nothing flowery. Some good choices would be Warm Wishes, Turning Twenty, Take Five, Bento Box, BQ or some of the free patterns offered by the fabric manufacturers. There are dozens to choose from out there and many of them would make a easy to cut and stitch quilt. I usually use Polydown batting as it washes and wears well and often use a flannel sheet for the backing. College quilts tend to get a bit of hard wear and sometimes end up at football games, the TV lounge, the soccer field or the hockey rink.

Hi Mandy!!

You share both my daughters name and the home city to my BEST friend, Ocala!!!!! It really is a very small world...

I would ask the young man for color choices...personal or school colors. If he chooses school colors, you should find tons of fabric at your local stores with the school mascot on it. Now, the pattern depends on your quilting skills. If you are a total beginner, keep the pattern very simple. I like to have beginners start with a checkerboard pattern...one dark square, one dark square, just like a checkerboard!! If you keep your squares cut about 3 1/2 inches, you will have a very nice sized quilt in no time and the quilitng can be a simple stitch in the ditch or you can stitch on the diagonial....again, very easy and nice eye candy.

Depending on how much time you want to put into it, you can applique the school letters for the center and surround it by easy blocks. I made this one from start to finish ( including quilting ) in less than 6 weeks. It was the very first time I tried applique ,too. It would have taken a lot less time had I not used the paper pieced stars.

The book Quilts for Men has some great ideas. I am making the nautical one for my husband.

Be very sure to put HIS name on it, as well as yours and the date.
In dorms, personal possessions have been known to get up and follow someone home.
