A Quilt For Comfort

Hello, quilters. I'm looking for suggestions for a fun, kids quilt. Last Friday, my daughter held a slumber party. Our new dog attacked one of the children. It was a horrifying night for all of us. It was a bad attack and she needed surgery to repair some of the wounds. It's been a nightmare of a week, to say the least. I find myself feeling guilty over missing my dog, but also so concerned for the girl. I was able to visit with the little girl last night and see that she was doing well and, thankfully, she still loves her dog.

Anyways, she's still on the mend and it's looking like a long summer for her, as she can't get wet. I would like to make her a quilt, but I'm having a hard time deciding on a pattern. She likes reds and blues, and animals.

This was a fun quilt I designed years ago. There is only one way for the fish in the lower right corner to get to his mate in the center.

You didn't say an age on the girl your making a quilt for. I just finished this one for my grandson. It was simple and easy.http://i1189.photobucket.com/albums/...h/SAM_1181.jpgOr, you could do something like an I-Spy DP9. Simple, cute, fun.

Oh, my goodness, my sympathy goes out to your family and also the little girl and her family. I hope everything goes well.

I just love your quilt. It's fun!

What a nightmare! I think an I Spy or a Candy Jar quilt would be good.

Every dog owners worst nightmare. My sympathy to all involved. I recently made a simple square within a square I saw on a Fons & Porter episode using only two fabrics. The inner square alternating with the outer band to make a positive and negative, light and dark. It goes together super fast.

I am so sorry to hear about this.

I love this owl quilt. http://www.pinterest.com/pin/160370436705951425/

So sorry for you all! I always love to make the Scrappy Bargello from Bonnie Hunters free site. I buy Moda Jelly rolls in pretty colors. It sews up really fast, has lots of color, and looks great.

So sorry for all of you. Hope she heals well. What about an Ispy to help keep her amused?

Check out Fat Cat patterns. Still plenty of free patterns.

What a nightmare indeed. I'm so sorry for both you and the little girl. I don't have a favorite fun quilt but I've seen lots of cute patterns here.

Have you thought about a healing project or on-going activity, that would include you and your daughter and the recovering girl and her mom? Something that is special and can last the summer. Maybe a pick-a-park-picnic where every week, the girls pick a different park and the four of you have a picnic there? Talk it over with the mom and see if you can help strengthen the girls' friendship and everyone can recover from this nightmare.

Go ahead and make a healing/comforting quilt but this will take time to make. It will help you heal as you make it and the girl will love it when it is completed.

So sorry for what she and your family went through, my prayers go out to both your families. I agree with Tartan that an I Spy quilt, if you can find enough things to "spy" might help her pass the time as she recovers. Another suggestion would be a simple 9-patch and snowball quilt, perhaps with dogs, cats or other animals; it would go together quickly, even if you don't snowball the plain blocks. That's always been my "go-to" quilt when I need one in a hurry.

I'm so sorry that this happened. It is a difficult thing to deal with for all. I'm sure a quilt will cheer her up.

My only suggestion would be to get it done FAST!! The pain is fresh, your remorse is fresh, and for a child, it's needs to get there soon! Don't fiddle around looking for the 'perfect' pattern and colors. Just pick something and get it done! She and her mother will remember your kind, thoughtful gift when she was hurt, not whether you use an ohio star, nine patch or snowball block with colors gathered over many months.

My sympathy to the little girl and God Bless you for doing the right thing with regard to both the dog and the little girl.

What does the little girl love? Favorite colors? Once you find that out, you can make a customized quilt for her! Your daughter may know the answer to both of those questions.

These are all great suggestions! She's doing well after her surgery and now keeps asking how I'm doing. I still keep having nightmares, but hoping that will end in time.

Maybe something simple like a YBR in bright pastels. In a mix of fun fabrics like dots, stripes, chevrons, zigzags, a fun flower ect. They all seem to like their names on things, so maybe applique her name or a large initial either on the front or back. There are tons of lines of fabrics like this that all coordinate. And it won't be too old or too young.

Bless you, your family, your puppy and the little girl. I wish you all the very best.

Wanda do you sell your design with instructions? I know one of my DGS would love this.

marcias 07-07-2014 07:26 PM

Ditto on the Maze quilt. That is really neat. Our son, many years ago, had to do mazes to help him. I enjoyed doing them as much as he did. Marcia in TX

I do not sell the design, but I am happy to share it. If you send me your email address, I would be happy to send it to you. The pattern also has the fabric requirements....
