Last night I went to our Library book sale and found a copy of Eleanor Burns' Quilt in a Day "Delectable Mountains Quilt" - it looks new and included the delectable mountains ruler. Has anyone ever made this quilt pattern and is it really "quilt in a day"? I'm anxious to try it as it doesn't look too complicated once I read the instructions five times.

That's a great old pattern. I haven't used her method, but working pairs of squares and re-arranging lights and darks, it does go fast. I've gotten tops done in a day, never a whole quilt.

nativetexan 10-20-2010 07:22 AM

I have the pattern but yet to make one. one day!!!

Bobbinchick 10-20-2010 07:35 AM

My sister has, she is at work so won't be able to answer until later this evening. I will leave an email for her.

"Quilt in a Day" is a myth! The time frame that is..... not the pattern. I can't imagine doing a quilt in a day. ANY quilt! Unless a day = 24 hours straight, with no cooking, no eating, no phone calls, no bathroom breaks, (!) no emergencies - little or big, no husband or kids in the house or anything else possible going on in the house. :-)

I don't know about the pattern.

If you look at her website, you may be able to find the DVD to go with the pattern to make it even easier. Her methods are great!

Aquarius 10-20-2010 09:23 AM

I watched her tutorial on quilt tv and she made it look so easy that even I could do it, but actually doing it is another matter.

Bluphrog 10-20-2010 09:29 AM

No, it's not a myth, if you are talking about making a quilt top. I pieced a card trick quilt from an Eleanor Burns book and starting with yardage, I cut and piece the top, including blocks and borders. And I took bathroom breaks and ate lunch and dinner, too. Of course, I was at a retreat, so didn't have to worry about cooking, cleaning, husband or kids.

Of course, now that I'm an empty nester, I don't have to stop for kids, and my DH never bothers me when I'm at my machine!

That looks like a fantastic quilt! Fantastic score!!

harvsstuff 10-20-2010 09:39 AM

I've made several of her quilts but not this one. If you follow her instructions and dont get ahead of yourself you can make any of her quilts. Just do follow what she says. Denise

amandasgramma 10-20-2010 09:41 AM

Not even if I used only back and one sheet of fabric for the top would I get one done in one day..... :)

Eleanor Burns' sister comes to our guild as a speaker...one year she told us she did make a quilt in a day, but that it took her 21 hours of straight sewing. She said that was a "few" years back  and that she wouldn't try it again.

The Quilt in a Day came from Eleanor's original way to do log cabin blocks by chain sewing them. You can make a lot of blocks very fast and do a quilt very quickly...although not sure if it would be in a day!!

I did the card trick quilt in a day once- it took me 3 days!

jlong 10-20-2010 02:34 PM

I did her Orion Star quilt and it took many days. Her directions are great and she does show you shortcuts that work. I would do another one if the book was a great price.

amma 10-20-2010 04:52 PM

I would be happy with a Quilt in a Week :D:D:D

darlin121 10-20-2010 04:57 PM

I used Elenor Burn's Quilt in A Day Log Cabin to make several quilts. It has always taken me two days. I suppose if I didn't have to stop for the children and my DH I might be able to do it but my life is not built that way!

Dorothy of Kansas 10-20-2010 05:20 PM

I made the Delectable Mountains by Eleanor Burns and really loved how the quilt came out. No, I didn't do it in one day, but I didn't mind. This is actually a very easy quilt to make. I plan to make another one soon. If you get stuck, feel free to PM me. Good luck!! :D

Stitchnripper 10-20-2010 05:36 PM

I love Eleanor Burns. I made a quilt from one of her books and while it took longer than a day, it was so clear and went together like a dream. I couldn't do anything in a day because I can't stay focused that long! Sew a seam, take a break, sew another seam, check email, sew a seam, get a snack, and so it goes! I use her techniques on other things I do and they are really good.

quilting cat 10-20-2010 10:01 PM

Some of the Eleanor Burns patterns CAN be pieced in a day -- the top only, of course.
Pre-cut and ORGANIZE fabrics. Have lunch catered, and turn off the phone! Good luck!

trolleystation 10-22-2010 12:42 PM

Don't time yourself, just enjoy yourself.

Annaquilts 10-22-2010 12:46 PM

I have done this but think Bonnie Hunts pattern is much easier. I have done both and did the Bonnie Hunt pattern several times. I did the QD pattern at Quilt in a Day.

http://www.quiltville.com/delmts.shtml

It is free and online
Oh if you do the later pattern press all the seams of the mountains open if you plan to bud mountains up like they show on the cover quilt picture.

This is what I was told and it would be for cutting and piecing a smaller top more then the whole actual quilt. Many of the quilts are very do able and incorperate easy techniques that you can use again to design your own quilts.

quilterguy27 10-22-2010 01:10 PM

I've learned many, many techniques from Eleanor Burns. I don't think I've actually made any of her quilt patterns, but I've used her techniques and have made many quilt tops in a day. Of course, it's best if you don't have any interuptions, but it can be done. Also, this doesn't include quilting, but since most of my quilts are lap size I could probably do the quilting as well, but that would make an awefully long day and only basic quilting.

quilterguy27 10-22-2010 01:12 PM

I also just watched her new online Strip-Tease video and she said that "Quilt In A Day" is the name of the company, not that you could actually make and quilt a quilt in a day. She said it was her disclaimer, lol!!!

mic-pa 10-22-2010 01:47 PM

I have done several of Eleanor Burns quilt in a day. Remember a day is 24 hours long. LOL Yes, I have done Delectable Mtns and if you follow her instructions and go slow it is quite doable. I also made the minature one in the back for a wallhanging and love it. Go for it girl.

jljack 10-22-2010 02:10 PM

We had Eleanor's sister Pat Knoechel at our guild meeting last night. She brought all the new patterns (Barns!!) and lots of new tips and tricks for cutting and sewing fast blocks. We just love having her come...we are her last stop before she goes home after traveling for 6 months. Imagine...she started coming to Bakersfield 28 years ago when Quilt in a Day started up, and she's still visiting us once a year. I took my mom to see Pat's show, and mom loved it!! We bought a couple of patterns. We had so much fun watching Pat.
