Quilt Disaster That Turned Out OK

I have this "special" quilt on my bed. It is special to me because it was a round robin I did a few years ago and then put the top away for four years. Then I spent 2 years (it is queen size) hand quilting it. Finally finished and looks awesome on my bed!

What's the disaster? My chihuahua decided to have her puppies on my bed. You can imagine what that quilt looked like after having 7 puppies born on it....yuck.

I figured it was ruined, but had to try to save it. I had some Clorox Fresh Care Stain Remover hanging around my laundry room, so I squirted plenty of that on the stain. Then I doused it liberally with Dawn dish washing liquid. Luckily she didn't move around much, so the stains were about 15" in a circle. Washed on cold water setting. This treatment got most of the stains out...but there were still a couple pretty ugly looking ones left. I applied the same solutions and washed again.

Yippie! This time I could not find even one stain! The quilt is saved! Dried in the dryer and back on my bed. I figure it is some kind of quilt miracle.

Our Dalmatian had 3 puppies before I woke up in our King sized water bed...Lucily she only made a mess on the sheet and pad. When I woke up she was licking one that she had pushed up against my leg. I put her in the box we had prepared and ended up with 12 pups.

Glad you got the stain out. Enjoy the puppies.

So glad you got the stain out of the quilt. Cute, cute, puppies!

Good for you! I know when they decide where they're going to have them, there's not much you can do until there done! lol!!
Really beautiful quilt, but now you've got me wanting to see ALL of it! Can you post a picture of it all?
:) :)

Looks like mama and babies are doing fine. Love the quilt and so happy you were able to revive it:)

It looks like she had a pretty nice little bed of her own but obviously she didn't want to get her bed messy! Glad you saved your masterpiece!

They're all so sweet we'll have to forgive her!

Wow - that WAS a miracle. And I second the request for a picture of the whole quilt. From what you show, it's gorgeous.

Wow, a story with two happy endings! Adorable doggy and puppies and gorgeous portion of quilt. Will also look forward to a picture of the whole quilt.

Cute mama and babies.

I've found that flushing most stains like blood, feces, urine, and vomit with cold water - when they are still fresh - gets most of the color out. Do this before doing anything else.

Glad you were able to save what looks like a very labor intensive (not talking about the dog) quilt!

Thanks for all the nice comments! I love this forum!

I am posting a picture of the quilt (shows most of it). Taken before the puppy disaster...lol. Sorry, I am not the best picture-taker.

I really loved doing the round robin. How exciting to work on making someone else's quilt become beautiful and not knowing to the last day what your own quilt will look like! I was amazed when I got mine back. The quilters used wonderful compatable colors and their border designs are beautiful. I was going for a "Fall" look and it turned out well. I would do it again.

What a beautiful quilt and adorable puppies! You had some talented quilters add to your quilt. The colors all go so well together.

Beautiful quilt, cute puppies

MollieSue 11-21-2011 12:30 PM

Thanks so much for posting a full picture of your quilt! I've never paticipated (way too chicken, afraid I'd really mess up someone else's quilt!) in the round robins, but have really wanted to try to make one similar on my own. Yours is absolutely beautiful!! :) :)

Who could be mad a sweet mama wanting her precious babies come into the world on a beautiful quilt? :-) How did that tiny thing have so many babies?

#1piecemaker 11-21-2011 12:37 PM

Ohhhhh, how cute! They are adorable. I'm glad you got the stain out. Mothers do hunt the most comfortable places to have their babies. hehehe! Glad you got the stain out.
