I'm having some one make a quilt for me, and I need to know how much fabric to buy since I'm enlarging it to a queen.
The original quilt is 56.5"x56.5" and it is going to be enlarged to 86"x93" This is what the directions say I need... Fabric Requirements 10-12 Assorted prints ... 1/4 yd. of each Blue star print ... 1 3/8 yds. Black solid ... 1 1/2 yds. Cream solid ... 1/2 yds. Backing ... 3 1/2 yds. Batting ... Twin size Other Materials Sewing thread Quilting thread (hand-quilting) Monofilament thread (machine-quilting) This is how to cut it Cutting Instructions Assorted prints ... 14 strips 2 1/2" x WOF (width of fabric) cut in pairs of 2 ... 7 strips 2 1/2" x 21", 1 to match each WOF pair ... 14 strips 2 1/2" x 21", cut in pairs of 2 ... 7 strips 2 1/2" x WOF, 1 to match each 21" pair Blue star print ...*1 square 44" x 44", cut in half diagonally to make half-square triangles (1 triangle needed) ... 4 squares 7" x 7", cut in half diagonally to make half-square triangles (cut from remaining 44" triangle) Black solid ... 4 strips 2 1/2" x 58", pieced from 6 WOF strips ... 1 Template A ... 1 Template B ... 1 Template C ... 1 Template D Cream solid ... 1 Template E * cut first and here is a photo of said quilt Could some one tell me how much I will need to make this to the queen size? (86"x96") |
Wow! I'll be impressed if someone is able to figure that out for you!
What I would probably do is calculate what percentage bigger the queen is (say, 30% bigger overall?), then purchase even more of each yardage (say, 40-50%). The leftovers would go into a stash. |
You're trying to turn a square into a rectangle without explaining what you plan to add to make it so. In other words, you need more of something on two sides to make it into a rectangle.

I do want a border on it... I got that after asking around... and it does work... but if it does not I can email it... I saved this to my computer. |
Well, that's stretching it quite far. Someone very experienced could maybe figure out how to enlarge the pattern, but it's going to be difficult. If all you want are the 9 patch pattern added to sides and top/bottom, then just measure inches and figure out how many more of the blocks you would need to do them. Am I being clear? Just figure how many more of the blocks you need, and go by the square inches of the blocks to know how much fabric.

The pattern was from McCalls - called Stairway To Cat Heaven - It's made from a nine patch
