The quilt is machine pieced, and the work is so close and tightly done, that at first look, you would think the top is all one piece of material. But since there is a tear in the one square, I could look at the sewing behind it. The seams are beautifully sewn, and clipped to about 1/8th inch. The blocks are outlines with black thread in a zigzag pattern throughout. The back is two pieces of the same red material with small white flowers. Oops, forgot to photograph that.

Not all the blocks are the same size. Some are just small strips sewn in. I thought maybe someone would recognize some of the old fabrics.

The butterfly looks like it is applqued by it is printed that way

The black zigzag is just design. The actual stitching is so tight it doesn't show. I hope someday I can do that good, lol.

The little brown strip is a single piece. There are a few this size. Look slightly to the left, there are some small pieces that size, too

I just can't get over how closely sewn this quilt is. Anyone who doesn't quilt...or someone less interested, would have just decided it was one big piece. I just kept looking at it. Some of the fabric is printed like quilted material, which kind of throws you off. I am glad that tear was in there, lol...to show me I was right, and it was pieced.

Oh, did I mention I paid $15 for the quilt? It measures 80 X 99. I brought it fresh and warm from the dryer and put it on the couch, and my doxie, Daisy (the one in my avatar) just put on the biggest smile. She loves quilts, especially fresh warm ones, lol.

I was just looking at the piece that is torn, and it probably should be replaced. But I know my limitations, lol. However, I think I am getting more sewing savvy by the day. Instead of trying to repair it, ...too big a hole, and the material is too fragile, or place another block on top of it,...no where near the skill this quilter had...., I think I will cut out a red heart, fuse it on interface to give it some body, and machine applique it over the top, using red thread....because the backing is red with little white flowers. That would cover the tear, reinforce the material, not show my lack of skill (hopefully), and not show up overly much on the back.

THought?

Thank you for sharing! I really enjoyed looking at this quilt. I think your heart applique sounds like a wonderful way to cover the tear. Hope that you and Daisey enjoy it for many years to come.
