Quilt hanging question
I made a quilt to hang at the bottom of the stairway and am wondering what the best way to put the hanging tabs on it. It will be hung from a rod. The quilt is larger than the opening and it is 56x88. Should I put the little hanging sleeves into the binding or sew them on after the binding and use buttons dress up the tabs. I'm thinking sewing the tabs into the binding will be stronger but someday I won't be using it there and will want the hanging tabs off. It shouldn't get heavy use of opening and closing. Thanks.

I might make a ton of hanging tabs but put fold in half to run the rid through and put a button hole in the end. Put flat buttons along the back binding line with good strong button hole thread and attach the tabs by buttoning them on the back. All you would need to do is remove the buttons later.

I made my tabs a little wider to provide more support for the quilt and sewed them on after the binding had been completed. I have have not had a problem with them. I left my tabs plain but love your idea of putting the buttons on for decoration.

If you have a Bed Bath & Beyond store, they come in several different finishes, styles, decorative finials etc. and they are always having sales & there's that 20% off coupon... Anyway, I bound my quilt in the usual way, and got an extra set of clips so the weight was evenly distributed. Works great and I can change the quilt or launder it very easily. |
I usually make a sleeve the same fabric as the background and place it just below the binding. So when you look down on it, you think you are seeing the back. I also use café curtain rods which only stick out about 1 1/2 inches and are smaller, so the sleeve is smaller also.

I found a "squeeze" solution where the binding of the quilt is held together between two boards. No hanging loops or sleeve necessary.

The Amish quilt hanger shown is very nice. I got the wooden clips which are the same principle from Keepsake Quilting and I love them. I switch my wall hangings seasonally and dreaded the switch using the tube method with a dowel or rod. It is so much easier now with the wooden clips.

I make a sleeve and bury the raw edges into the binding before the hand sewing is done. Then you need to hand stitch the fold edge attaching it carefully to the quilt back. Sometimes, I made them wider than necessary so that I could stitch in the ditch in a border seam for better support.
