Quilt kits...

One of the hardest parts of quilting for me, is choosing fabrics. I will spend hours and sometimes days and days agonizing over fabric and color choices. I would like to try a quilt kit where everything is already coordinated! I know connecting threads has kits. Are they good quality? Any other sites that are good to order from?

nygal 05-19-2013 02:12 PM

Connecting Threads has wonderful quality fabrics so I would think their kits would be good too.

Wanabee Quiltin 05-19-2013 02:14 PM

I bought a table runner kit once and the fabric was excellent. I am really picky about color and this was perfect, don't be afraid of buying from them.

Marilynsue 05-19-2013 02:22 PM

Keepsake Quilting is another quality shop to buy kits/fabrics from. I've used them for years.

GagaSmith 05-19-2013 02:27 PM

I bought two kits from CT-- a table runner and a Christmas quilt. Both were very nice. I, too, have a hard time choosing fabric. Lately I have been buying mainly fabrics in the same line, a yard or 1/2 yard of six or so fabrics. I have also been using layer cakes, charms and fat quarters from the same lines.

dunster 05-19-2013 02:36 PM

I've seen some beautiful quilts made from kits, so I don't mean to discourage their use. When I started quilting my least favorite part of the whole process was picking out the fabrics. But I kept on doing it, until now it's one of my favorite things to do. If you stick with it, it will become easier, and more fun, and there is a lot of satisfaction in knowing that your quilt is unique, not made from a kit.

pattypurple 05-19-2013 03:25 PM

Connecting Threads is very generous with the amount of fabric they send in their kits. I think I have enough for a second quilt from the kit for a kid's quilt.

michelleoc 05-19-2013 03:38 PM

Auntevie: Too bad we don't live close to each other. My FAVORITE part is picking the fabrics. I could pick the fabrics and you could sew!

Creative quilt kits has a great online store and their fabrics are great!

Pollytink 05-19-2013 04:31 PM

Has anyone tried John Flynn's precut kits? He has a Drunkard's Path I really like.

jcrow 05-19-2013 04:32 PM

Fat Quarter Shop online has the best quilt kits around. I buy from them mostly, if I want to buy a kit. They send large portions of fabrics and they are beautifully wrapped. They have pages and pages of quilt kits. They are a very high class joint. I recommend them over any other place. fatquartershop.com

or choose a pattern from a book/magazine. say you want a brown for the main color. choose a brown with flowers, or a brown with dots, etc. your secondary color will be the colors in the flowers or the dots. then add white. or let someone elses finished quilt be your color scheme. a color wheel from a paint store will help lots.

Kits are fun but don't be so scared to choose fabric, yes it takes time and is hard but it can be so lovely. Sometimes fabrics you choose might look better than kits. I do both buy kits and make my own

Grandma Bonnie 05-19-2013 06:41 PM

I, too, like Connecting Threads fabrics and kits. I always have leftover fabrics when I make one of their quilts from a kit.

JanTx 05-19-2013 08:41 PM

I make a lot of quilts with packs of fat quarters or other precuts. Layer cakes (10" squares) are my new best friend. I just finished quilts for my grandsons preschool teacher and my loving daughter said - who picked the fabrics for you? That meant she loved them and knew they were not solely my choosing. She knows me well.

Nammie to 7 05-19-2013 08:46 PM

I've purchased a couple of kits - they contained specialty fabric I couldn't get elsewhere or fabric not available in my area. Most of the time I think picking the fabric is most of the fun. The best place to learn how to pick fabric is at your LQS. Spend time there watching what others pick, ask them why they made the choices they made. It will help you understand what you need to do to pick out stunning fabric for your quilts.

I've been happy with kits from Keepsake Quilting and Connecting Threads. I love the kits from the Fat Quarter Shop. They are always accurate and they are very generous with fabric.

judylg 05-20-2013 04:40 AM

The kits are nice, they do all of the selecting and at times I like that. My only concern with kits, is that there be enough fabric to make it, does not allow for little mistakes from me. I do like picking fabric out for a particular quilt or for a maybe. It is amazing at times how the maybes are used in time.

BellaBoo 05-20-2013 05:10 AM

I have a cabinet full of quilt kits. Most are from Connecting Threads and Hancock's of Paducah. I do a lot of BOM quilt kits too. Sometimes I use the fabric for other patterns then what the kit has.

When I first started quilting, I was also having difficulty. I had no "artistic" bone in my body, so I always questioned and second guessed myself. One day, I thought "what the heck" and just started choosing colors that I liked, and it was pretty darned good, so I say trust your instincts, and choose what you like. Who says every quilt has to be color coordinated? I make quilts in colors that I like, and so far, the finished product is always better than I imagined when I started. Sometimes, the fabric even "talks" to me, and tells me what pattern to use with the fabric I have chosen.
On the other hand, Jinny Beyer has wonderful quilt kits available, and she also shows her quilts in different colorways for comparison. Even if you don't buy anything from her site, go to the website (jinnybeyer.com) Quilt Kits tab, and click on some of the patterns to see the difference the color makes to the final product. I will tell you, I don't buy often from her site, because I think it is a little pricey, but the ideas are fabulous.

I've just finished piecing John Flynn's blue and white Drunkard's Path, and done his multi-colour batik Storm at Sea. Both kits were perfectly cut, and a pleasure to put together. I would never have tried either if I'd had to cut them out myself. I can warmly recommend them!

DixieLee 05-20-2013 10:54 AM

I have used numerous kits from Connecting THreads and Fons and Porter. All have had ample and beautiful fabrics. Have been very happy with what I have gotten.

Jamiestitcher62 05-20-2013 11:24 AM

I've used Fatquartershop.com as well for kits. I bought a quilt kit from them about 5 years ago and I am still making quilts with the extra fabric. Very generous.

qbtexas 05-20-2013 11:44 AM

haha...when I was walking around the Houston quilt show with my bf's mom, I'd see a pattern I like and then often, "and it comes in a kit!!" because I struggle with picking fabrics. I'm not bad at it, but I do like buying something pre-packaged. Maybe I'm just lazy. LOL

Auntevie 05-20-2013 11:46 AM

Thank you for all the suggestions! Can not wait until tonight when i will have more time to browse all the sites. I'm glad to hear that they have generous cuts of fabric because that was one of my concerns.

I agree... Choosing your own fabric to fit a pattern makes it truly your own creation. And I love that!!! But I thought it might be somehow relaxing once in while, to not have to think or worry about colors and placement of different fabrics.... Which I know i definitely fuss way too much over. I'm a fairly new quilter and maybe with time, ill be able to see the whole picture easier.

kathyd 05-21-2013 02:53 AM

I have bought many quilt kits for the reasons you have. I've never been dissappointed, most kits have plenty of fabric and on many occasions have made a 2nd much smaller quilt from the leftovers! Try www.hancocks-paducah.com their kits are great.

ckcowl 05-21-2013 03:06 AM

pretty much all quilt shops carry/offer kits- check your local quilt shop- then check out Connecting threads, Keepsake Quilting, QuiltKitsOnLine, Blue Bamboo, Jenny Beyer, Elenor Burns-Quilt in a Day, Judy Martin, the Cotton Patch in East Tawas Michigan-(hundreds of kits), PineNeedles, Homestead Hearth, Quilt and Needle, ---gosh, their are literally hundreds and hundreds of shops that offer kits- you may want to check out the list of shops on the 'fabshophop' I think this month their are 140 shops listed- check out the ones that catch your eye & see what appeals to you- also many, many pattern/books authors, designers also have shops and also offer their quilts in kit form- some even have their own fabric lines to go with their patterns/designs

I agree!! I joined a Kansas Troubles BOM from them over a year ago. Purchased 2 kits wanting a King size quilt. To my surprise, the fabric in one kit was enough to make double the blocks! I am using all the extra fabric to make another (different) quilt!! BTW they are currently putting together another Kansas Troubles BOM. Am I tempted!!
Local LQS tries to cut corners for the $ and I've messed up with them. Someone like that only gets one chance with me!

Yooper32 05-21-2013 04:18 AM

CT has great kits and you won't find any anywhere else that are as reasonable.

carslo 05-21-2013 05:59 AM

I have ordered from Connecting Threads and the Fat Quarter Club (when on sale) both are great. Remember collections of fabrics all coordinate and are an excellent way to learn about colour and values when making quilts - by ordering a 1/2 yard of ten different fabrics in a collection and 2 yards each of what colours in the collection you can make a nice trip around the world with great borders and truly learn about fabrics. :)

judykay 05-21-2013 06:54 AM

I have purchased many kits from Connecting Threads and each and every one of them have been great fabric, I just ordered another one yesterday.

mckwilter 05-21-2013 11:47 AM

Stitchin' Heaven in Mineola, TX has nice kits, and they have a good block of the month program, too. Pinwheels and Posies in Dickinson, TX also has some nice kits. I ordered a kit from Connecting Threads once and was disappointed in the fabric. The hand was not comfortable and the colors were not what was pictured, so I haven't gone back there.

klgreene 05-21-2013 01:31 PM

I don't usually buy kits, but I won the Feb. Shop Hop, and ended up buying a kit from ShabbyFabric.com. It had enough extra fabric that I made a mini quilt just like the original. I would definitely buy from them again.

LadyElisabeth 05-21-2013 02:57 PM

Many local quilt shops sell kits. If you can go there you can check out the fabric

Kathleen122 05-21-2013 07:10 PM

I have purchased several kets from them & have been very happy with the fabrics & patterns. My only suggestion is to open the kits right away & make sure all the fabric was there & in the sizes stated in the pattern. I received one kit that was missing fabric & did not check it. It was short 2 fat quarters of the fabric when I got around to it & that was about 6 months after the purchase. I contacted them & unfortunately they did not have any yardage in the missing pieces, but they did have some other of the fabrics in the same line so that they were able to send me 2 fata quarters. And, since it was the same line no one but me knew they were not the same design as called for. Their customer service is great.
