So I'm new to the whole thing about labels...and I haven't been able to figure out how to label mine...What are some suggestions that everyone has...as I'd like to label the quilt I'm doing right now...

Hey! I know there are many ways to label a quilt... here's how I do some of mine! I have one of these "Create Your Own Label" books:

I put my fabric patch over the page that I coose and I trace the whole thing with one of those permanent, quilter's fabric markers... like a quilter's Sharpie, only with a nice, fine point.

Then that patch becomes the label and I sew it onto the backing fabric before quilting.

I embroider mine in my embroidery machine and applique it to the back of the quilt or put it agains the border when attaching the binding.

For my quilt labels I love to use the "photo" fabric. I use a text program like Microsoft Word. You can use fancy type face, bring in pictures, just anything you like. Print it out and attach it to the back of your quilt. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on how to get the print to "set". I usually use half of the page for the label, turn under all around and slip stitch into place.

No matter what method you use, just be sure that you DO IT!!!! My grandmother made a ton of quilts. Not one had a label. I managed to snag a few of them from my sisters (so NOT quilt worthy!!), but I'm sure most of those quilts will be forever anonymous.

Yeah I've made about 20 quilts in my lifetime, and not even thought about labeling them...so I'm going to start...I'm making one for my sister right now that I'm going to label...if I can figure out how to do it...hence the question

You can get fancy, but the simplest way I know of is to iron fabric to freezer paper and write as much information as you want with the pigma pen, then applique to the back of quilt. If you are using a solid back, rather than a print, you can actually write on the quilt back. I have been known to do that a time or two. :oops: I like to be a bit more "fancy" however. But like Shelly said..........DO IT!! I have a couple quilts my grandmother did, (many years ago) without labels of course, so I made a label for them. I stated the date was unknown, but approximately ???? and put a picture of grandmother on the label. One of the ones I have was made especially for my grandfather, (grandma told me!) so I added that info also. Good luck with what ever method you use.

I do the same thing as Humbird. I use freezer paper and a pigma pen. If I am giving the quilt as a gift and I want to be "fancy" then I may print something out in a fancy font on computer and use my light box to trace it onto the fabric. I have even printed out simple line drawings to trace too. Another idea is to make an extra block like your quilt top and write info on it.

i do like sewjoyce and create mine on the computer and print them out on fabric (treated or untreated, depending on the project). here are a few:

A few years ago I bought some fabric that I WAS going to use as backing. I got 5 1/2 yards, intending to use half a yard as labels. Over the years, I have fallen in love with this simple little white and tan print. I use it ONLY for labels. I cut them 6 x 8 inches. I need lots of room because I like to put a lot of information. As you can see, my handwriting would not take any prizes. :-) I just pin it on and sew it down.

Wow what great ideas! I think I"m going to just invest in some permanent pens for fabric and write on them myself! This has definitely helped!

My Mom told me when I was doing cross stitch to "document" them. Someone in the future might well be very interested in who made them and when. So I started to do it with the quilts as well.

How do you set the pigma pen? I used them to make labels on several quilts and after a few washings, they faded and I have to make the label all over again.
