I only have one quilt label book but I can't find just the right label for my quilt. I was wanting for everyone who helped hand quilt it to sign it (5 women) but I didn't want to make a huge label. Any suggestions on a good quilt label book?

I'm certainly not a pro with quilting, but couldn't you iron some muslin or similar material to freezer paper and have your quilting helpers sign it...then you could size the label (before or after signing). I plan to try this with a quilt I am making for a wedding, and have guests sign block that have been adhered to freezer paper. I even through of using a rubber stamp for decoration. Let me know what you think.

Thanks! I thought I might do it all on paper and then scan it into my computer and then run the fabric on freezer paper through my printer. I was just wanting some vines or something to go around the top and sides or some sort of flowery ornamentation.

if you have something like printmaster you could find a flower border print it than put the names in it then scan like you planed on doing

I make all my labels on the computer. Be sure to heat set the ink once it has printed.... same with signatures (use pigma pens). When you heat set make sure there is NO water in the iron. You want a dry iron. Barb C.

hi! If your sewing machine has an alphabet feature I like to embroider out my quilt label. I used to use a permanent marker but I like the look of a "sewn out" label so much better. You could do this on your backing fabric before you quilt it and the label will be there permanently!

Thanks for all these ideas!! I do have an alphabet on my sewing machine. I have a Bernina 440QE without the embroidery card, but I can do some alphabet. I already quilted my quilt so that's one reason that I didn't want a huge label.

When making your labels, do you use photo transfer paper and print to that, or do you use material that is ironed to freezer paper?

I just use fabric that has been ironed to freezer paper.

You reminded me... when I did my first label for my first quilt.......I forgot to "mirror" the image to iron on. What a mess, but I wasn't putting it directly to the quilt, I was using the paper/fabric method. THANK GOD!! I'd have had an mess of a quilt. Now, I think about what I'm doing when making the signature patch and blend it in with the quilt.

Must always heat set though, this I'm sure of. How did the ladies of early quilting make their quilt signatures???

You are running the signatures through your scanner...save this scanned name list to your harddrive or CD then go to any graphics program you have and choose a BORDER graphic and put it on whatever size label you plan to make (go into FORMAT in your program tool bar, i have Word Perfect Program, then choose LABELS) then you can get your SAVED names off your CD or hardrive and drop that into the border lined graphic. I have lots of graphic programs but the one I use the most and the one I love the most is CREATE A CARD PLUS #3. It has all kinds of border designs. I have used these border designs to make matts/frames for pictures, too. After you get the border and the names centered in your graphic project label, then just print out your LABEL on whatever fabric you have decided to use for your quilt. Make sure the label FABRIC has been treated with BUBBLE JET or that you are using the fabric sheets made specifically for pictures. Good luck. Make sure you send a picture of your work. I will attache a picture of a label I recently made.

I know it's too late for the quilt you were working on but I'll give you my idea on labels...I have tried to make each one spedial...using the fabrics from the quilt itself and designing one that goes with it...for my "Trip around the World" quilt, the label looks like a postcard w/stamp in corner.
This was unintentional - my husband noticed the similarity and asked if that was what it was! Then, if I am giving the quilt to one of my "Grands" or "Greats", I have room to add a personal message for them.

Do you have a graphics program on your computer? You can make your own labels by printing on fabric (follow the instructions on the fabric package). I make all my labels using BORDERS, IMPORTED PICTURES, NICE FONTS AND COLORS of ink to contrast or compliment the back of the quilt. It's easy, economical and you can make labels the size you want from 8 x 10 to wallet size and any size in between. I'll find the pictures of some of my labels and post them so you can see what I've done.

Can anyone recommend a website to find quit labels?

On two small wall hanginging I made for my aunts this past Christmas I used the printable iron on fabric sheets and pressed it onto the back before quilting, making sure the to catch the ends of the lable into the quilting. The other way for my neighbors quilt, I used the permanent fabric marker and wrote it in one of the lower corners of the quilt.

I did a google search and found these sites to print quilt labels.

You all should take note, that at the bottom of each page, links are provided to vendors that supply that particular topic. At the bottom of this page for example are links to places to purchase quilt labels. I also buy quilt label panels when I see them. The smaller ones look really neat inside of quilted jackets and purses. Some of my panels have never been used, but I have them, so I figure I am ahead of the game. :lol:

As far as I know, they just used India ink. I used to have lots of antique quilts and the signatures would fade to a brownish-black, so whatever it was, it had some iron in, as well as pigment.
