So I recently pulled out a quilt my Grandma made me in 1994 and put it on my bed but it has some stains on two spots!! It's all hand quilted so I'm a little scared to put it in the washing machine? As it's been in storage for the last 15 years or so I have no idea what the stains are and have no idea how it would have been washed previously.....any suggestions?

you will get lots of different recommendations for this-
me- i would pre-treat the stains- then toss it into the washer- with detergent- and wash it- probably with warm water (unless its bright-dark-then i'd use cold) on a gentle cycle- then i would take it out- check to make sure the stains came out- and toss it into the dryer- that's how i wash all of my quilts- but that is me- lots of people treat them as if they are gauze that will disintegrate with such treatment- my daughter's quilt from 1976 is still together- and has been washed probably thousands of times. i would only be (more careful) if it were falling apart- which you did not say was an |
I would put it in the washer on gentle after treating the spots. In the summer I dry mine outside but in the dryer during winter with no problems. Every quilt I have made in 40 years of quilting have been put in the washer and dryer with no problems. The only ones I treat differently are the ones I have collected that are close to and over 100 years old and have fraying issues.

Treat the spots and wash, then dry on a low setting. I wash my quilts all the time and most of mine are hand quilted.
As long as it's sturdy you shouldn't have any problems. |
Just don't dry it until you are sure the sops are out!

I was told by a Quilt appriser to wash in cold gential cycle, for about 5 min. squeeze out water DO NOT spin, or wring, rinse the same way, do again if spots are still there, lay flat to dry use a product called quilt wash (only use 1/2 percribed amount) you can get at most LQS, my quilt is a circa 1940 hand pieced and quilted.

My clothes are all older than your quilt! Go with what ckcowl said.

Stitch you can soak it in oxyclean for days too. That should get the stains out. Then wash it on gentle in the washer. I have spun mine and they do ok on gentle. I guess you need to know your washer.
