Which quilt magazine?
My Granddaughter is selling magazines for Girl Scouts so I thought if I am going to buy one it may as well be a quilt magazine.
I have never subscribed to a quilt magazine and have bought very few so I'm not sure about any of them. I like more traditional patterns and earth tones. I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea what the different ones are like. The choices I have are Love of Quilting, McCall's Quilting, Quilters World, Quilters Newsletter, and Quilt Maker. Any input would be greatly appreciated. |
I like McCall's quilting and Quilters World.

McCall's Love of Quilting.

sewingsuz can you tell me a little about the patterns in them? Thanks

The only magazine I pick up regularly is Quilters Newsletter. It is more what is going on and features a quilter's work. A few patterns but more articles.

I like McCalls and Quiltmaker. They have a variety of styles so it would be hard for me to classify.

You could go to the websites of the magazines to get an idea of their covers (usually the featured quilts), colors and patterns. On some of them, if you click on a magazine cover you will see photos of all the quilts inside. Here are the websites:
http://www.fonsandporter.com/issues/index.html (Love of Quilting) http://www.mccallsquilting.com/mccal...ues/index.html (McCall's Quilting) http://www.quiltersworld.com/shopping.php?mode=archive (Quilter's World) http://www.quiltersnewsletter.com/issues/index.html (Quilter's Newsletter) http://www.quiltmaker.com/issues/index.html (Quiltmaker) Quilter's World is probably the most traditional, with Quiltmaker also tending towards traditional patterns. Quiltmaker provides detailed, step-by-step patterns for each quilt; for me it is a little too staid and rigid. Quilter's World is more chatty and often provides some interesting stories and history. I think Love of Quilting tends to be pretty traditional too, but I don't have a lot of experience with that one. McCall's provides a good mix. Quilter's Newsletter nowadays tends to provide more quilting news -- quilt shows, quilt artists, etc. -- and tends to feature more complex quilts. |
Prism thank you so much for taking the time to provide the links and info on all the magazines. That is a lot of work for you and I really appreciate it.

I have subscribed to all of these at one time or another. I think Love of Quilting has more traditional patterns, although they have tried to appeal to younger quilters lately with some more modern designs. Quilters World also seems to have more of the kinds of quilts you prefer. Of course, you can use your favorite fabrics in any design and make it more traditional looking.
