I recently got a Take 5 pattern to make a lap quilt for my dh. I was going to use patrotic material. He's now decided he doesn't like it that pattern. Does anybody have any ideas for different patterns that wouldn't be too frilly?
TIA |
I saw this quilt and instantly put it on my list for my son.

*sigh* I wish I could help. Mine doesn't want *any* kind of pattern. Including, but not limited to, patterned fabrics. I'm making him a quilt with large appliqued Canadian Airborne wings on solid black...with solid maroon, solid royal blue, solid gold and solid white borders. I'm not even allowed to use blenders/marbles. Just solids. No block patterns or anything!

You might consider BQ quilt or maybe a Three of a Kind by Judy Martin . Those Thinking Outside the Box quilts are cool. I recently made my hubby 'da Vinci by Jinny Beyer. I'll put it back up as my avatar.

basic 4 patch or 9 patch alternated with solids

"Just Can't Cut it" is a good one. I just saw a BQ3 made up and loved it, too.

I made DH a Warm Wishes quilt pattern using muted reds, blues, and tans. It's at the quilters getting basted now. He loves all the quilts though, even the floral pink one his Godmother made as a wedding gift to us. I made him one for his deer camp room. It was panels of deer sashed and backed with cameo fabric. It looks good on his camp bed and not quilt-y at all.

How about something like a mariners compass pattern in batiks or maybe bearpaw pattern using homespun fabrics with small plaids in dark colors.Have fun he will love what ever you make .

I made my DH a Quick Trip Around the World. Well almost got it made. Borders and back will be camoflague. Top is blenders squares in green, tans/golds and black that complement the camo. I gave him the top with an IOU for Christmas. He was supposed to have a sewing cabinet built for me for Christmas. Neither were finished. He said the other night he figured he better work on my Christmas present so that I could finish his Christmas present. Haha!

what about a turning 20? I"m new to quilting so I don't know....I thought about making a turning 20 for my nephew who is going to college next year.

Disappearing 9 patch...IMO, frilly quilts come from frilly fabrics.

A couple of years ago I made Rich a quilt for his birthday. I used a pattern I found at http://quilterscache.com It is called Squares within Squares 2. It is a 12-inch block. Rich loves big cats so I used a tiger print for the center square and used green and black for the borders. He loved it!

i made my dh a 9 patch on point with civil war repros. no two 9 patches were a like. it had no border and the center squares are navy blue as is the back. he loves :>) it.

My DH was into hunting, snow skiing, and still is into fishing. I made him a quilt that had a focus fabric of very young sweet buxem ladies lying about in a cabin and doing those sporting things. When I gave him the quilt, I told him. "these better be the only other ladies I ever see him wrapped up with!" LOL
He loves it to this day--and cuddles with it regularly!

Hi. When I started to make a quilt forDH I used Jeans material(recycled) and cut out hearts on which I appliqued over the flannel hearts. You can just zigzag it on. I made it lap size and he loves it. Very manly. The raw edge of the flannel heart can be made from his old shirts. He uses his when he naps in his big chair. Marvel

That is a great quilt, and it does not look frilly. I made mine a scrappy bulleye and he loves it

Sometimes its not the pattern they don't like but the colors that were used to make that pattern.
|
That's a great quilt!!! Do you have the pattern?? Will consider sharing it?
|
I would love to know the name of the pattern! I have been searching for a masculin quilt and I love that one!

Make enough nine patches to cover the size of the quilt you want out of fall colors browns,tans,rusts..(dont be tempted to put green or blue in this one...) Or use a dozen shades of blues...Harmonious colors!
Take each 9 patch block, and cut it into fourths, Now sew them all togther turning them every which way - or you can alternate them with plain one piece blocks - to make the top. I think men don't care so much about the patterns, but without being able to tell you why, react to the colors. |
